Introduction 

Sujeeth's high-octane action-thriller movie Saaho was released in 2019. In addition to Bollywood actress Shraddha Kapoor and well-known South Indian actor Prabhas, the film also stars Neil Nitin Mukesh, Chunky Pandey, and Jackie Shroff in supporting parts. One of the most costly Indian movies ever filmed, Saaho was made with a staggering budget of almost 350 crores. The movie centres on a high-profile robbery that happened in Bombay and the efforts made by a special task group to solve the case. Details

Plot 

Ashok played by Prabhas is introduced as a mastermind criminal renowned for his flawless robbery planning and execution. He is the leader of a group of skilled individuals that help him carry out dangerous crimes throughout the city. Nobody is aware of his true identity or motivations, though.

On the other side of the law, Shraddha Kapoor plays a fearless and devoted policewoman Amritha, who is committed to bringing Ashok and his gang to prison. She is committed to solving his identity puzzle and putting an end to his criminal actions.

As the plot develops, it becomes clear that a much bigger conspiracy is at work. Devraj, played by Jackie Shroff, is the head of a gigantic underworld group that aims to control the city's resources and influence politics. In order to destroy this group from within, Ashok, a criminal genius who doubles as a vigilante, has been operating covertly.

As Ashok and Amritha initially find themselves pitted against one another but subsequently work together to reveal the real perpetrators and bring them to justice, the movie is full of nail-biting action scenes, mind-bending story twists, and exciting chase sequences. The plot transports the audience on a suspenseful rollercoaster trip filled with shocking betrayals and a conflict for the future of the city.

As the big moment draws near, the movie achieves its pinnacle with an incredible showdown between Ashok, Amritha, and Devraj in which their fates clash, and Ashok's past is finally revealed.

Thinkal Menon from TNN, rated the film 2.5/5 stars as she found the film to lack a gripping screenplay and convincing characters. Due to too many villains, it becomes difficult to focus on every character which results in the lack of an emotional connection with the protagonist. Furthermore, she says that Saaho is a project which relies more on the technical aspects than the script.

Character Analysis

• Prabhas portrays Ashok Chakravarthy, a talented and committed undercover police officer entrusted with looking into a high-profile robbery. Ashok is presented as a stern, no-nonsense lawman who is prepared to go above and beyond to complete the task at hand. He also has a vulnerable side, too, which becomes apparent as he starts to feel something for his partner, Amritha Nair.

• Amritha Nair, played by Shraddha Kapoor, is a knowledgeable and resourceful crime branch officer who is also involved in the robbery investigation. Amritha is presented as a confident woman who can handle herself in any scenario and isn't scared to speak her thoughts. She also has a more vulnerable side, as evidenced by her developing affections for Ashok.

• The wicked King, a mastermind thief who is responsible for the high-profile crime, is portrayed by Neil Nitin Mukesh. King is shown to be a cold, calculating person who is constantly one step ahead of the law. King is an intriguing opponent because, despite his horrible crimes, he is given a certain level of depth and complexity.

The majority of the film was filmed in three locations: the first was Ramoji Film City, the second was Australia, and some action scenes were filmed in Dubai.

The Dubai scene was the most difficult to shoot as it was the most expensive part of the film. For the filming of that scenario, 40 police-style vehicles, JCBs, and four large trucks were used.

Controversy 

• The Saaho teaser received flak for being too reminiscent of Mission: Impossible and The Dark Knight.

• Another controversy was brought up by the inclusion of a certain music in the movie, which was claimed to have been lifted verbatim from a song by the French band Justice. The band's followers expressed their displeasure on social media by accusing the filmmakers of stealing the music without providing proper acknowledgment.

• The inclusion of a lip-lock sequence between Prabhas and Shraddha Kapoor in the movie angered some of the actor's supporters. On social media, this sparked some outrage from disappointed fans who even threatened to boycott the movie.

• Actress Lisa Ray accused the makers of stealing an illustration by Shilo Shiv Suleman as a poster for the film.

Interesting Facts

• A complaint for fraud and deception was made against the director and several employees by the baggage and bag company Outshiny India at the Madhapur police station. The producers allegedly broke a pricey agreement they made with the producer that required the manufacturer's product to be featured in the movie. 

• Filming the action scenes consumed a significant portion of the expenditure.

• The action scenes were choreographed by international stunt coordinator Kenny Bates.

• Around the Burj Khalifa, a lengthy action scene that is featured in the script was extensively filmed; 25 crores of the allocated budget were used.

• On October 22, 2017, Prabhas' birthday, the first teaser poster for the movie was unveiled.

Ratings

Bollywood Hungama gave the movie a 2.5 out of 5 star rating, praising the cast's work and the unexpected climax but criticising the narration as plodding and clunky. The Indian Express gave the movie 1.5 out of 5 stars and noted that Vikrant Massey's acting was praised despite the fact that the movie failed to ramp up the fear.

Saaho received a harsh 8% rating from critics and a 55% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. According to Rachel Saltz from the New York Times, the film is shot stylishly but lacks charm and an emotional connection.

Conclusion 

The movie has stylish direction, eye-catching visual effects, and a well-rounded ensemble cast that engages viewers throughout. Despite controversy and criticism, the movie was a huge box office hit that contributed to Prabhas' career as one of the most well-known actors in Indian cinema.
