1. Rang Panchami- Maharashtra

In Maharashtra, Holi is celebrated as Rang Panchami and Shimga. In this state, Dhuleti celebrates five days after Phalgun Purnima. On this day people play with rangs, dance to the beats of Dhol and enjoy the traditional Holi sweets. In Maharashtra especially in the Konkan region people come together and celebrate this joyous occasion Shimga. Holi usually lasts for five to seven days in Maharashtra; The play of colours takes place on the fifth day of Rangpanchami.

 Holika Dahan:

The people of the comunity come together for collecting the firewood for the Holika Dahan. In the evening of Shimga, the entire village gathers at one place and a massive Holi is lit. Even coconut is put into the fire as a special offering. When the fire is burning, a sound is made by the people by hitting the mouth with the back of the hand, after that everyone exchanges warm Holi wishes to each other.

Welcoming Spring:

Holi is also celebrated as the end of the winter season and welcomes the spring season. People in Konkan dress up to welcome the spring season, play with colours and perform folk dance music. A peculiar high-pitched sound is produced by striking the mouth. Even fishermen of the area also participate in the festival by singing and dancing .

 Delicious Holi Dishes:

Holi celebrations are incomplete without mouth-watering sweets and delicacies. In Maharashtra, women get involved in making Puran Poli on the occasion of Holi.  This is a delicious paratha with a sweet stuffing of jaggery and lentils, which tastes even better with ghee. Apart from this, people also treat themselves with freshly extracted sugarcane juice or a piece of watermelon.

 Traditional Rituals:

The Kokani people believe that Shimga represents the arrival of the Gods and hence carry the idols of the deities to their homes in palkhis. For this, the villagers decorate the walls of their houses with flower garlands and the entrance with Rangoli. People dance with the palkhi and seek blessings from God and pray for the well-being of their families. This is one of the best and traditional rituals that have been kept alive in Konkan.

 Last day of Shimga:

 The fifth day of Shimga is called Rang Panchami and is reserved for Rang play. People of all ages come together to paint each other with natural colors made from herbs like neem, kumkum and turmeric. On the other hand, children and adults get ready with balloons, water guns and colours and completely drench each other with color and water.

Bhang is the most famous drink of Holi. In northern India, people mostly consumed bhaang or thandai and laddoo.
