The TV show was directed by renowned Indian filmmaker Anurag Basu. Ghose is a multi-talented filmmaker known for his contributions to Indian cinema, having directed several critically acclaimed films, Life in a Metro and Barfi. The production company behind the TV show was Ishana Movies, a well-known Indian publishing house.
To his parents' disappointment, Tarapada, a young man, leaves his house in pursuit of fresh interactions, knowledge, and connections. On his most recent journey, he does, however, meet a wealthy zamindar who, after getting to know him, offers him to reside in his home with his family. In this situation, Tarapada observes his own entanglement in the web of connections.
One of Tagore's most well-known works is Chokher Bali. The protagonist of the tale is Binodini, a stunningly beautiful young educated rebellious widow who is deemed unfit for safety in widow asylums due to her independent spirit. Later, she discovers herself in the home of Ashalata, the gullible illiterate wife of Mohendra, the man who had turned her down for marriage. The story's central conflict is how Binodini's interactions with them and Mohendra's friend Bihari develop.
This tale highlights the distinctions between rural and urban life from the viewpoint of a young child. Vibrant villager Phtaik leaves his family behind to chase his goal of residing in the thriving metropolis of Kolkata. Phatik is excited to begin his new voyage while being first mesmerised by the city's fast cars and lofty structures. He quickly discovers life's darker side. The child makes a risky action to get back home because the situation becomes uncomfortable for him. Sadly, he does not have the desired outcome.
In the touching tale Maanbhanjan, Giribala is a young married woman whose husband has lost his heart for her. Giribala tries to find happiness in her husband's enormous mansion as he seeks and lavishes all of his inherited fortunes on a theatre artist. She unexpectedly unlocks the doors to her freedom after learning about her husband's new love interest and is determined to win him back.
Punishment first appears to be the narrative of a regular Bengali family consisting of two brothers and their continuously arguing wives. One of the women, Mini, is a driven young woman with a supportive spouse. However, after her sister-in-law passes away tragically, things start to get worse. Her spouse accuses her of murder out of the blue and promises to save her from all the trouble. Mini ultimately faces punishment for a crime she didn't commit. She uses silence as a weapon to exact revenge on her husband for the horrible injustice done to her.
One of the biggest challenges faced by the production was staying true to Tagore's stories while making them appealing to a modern audience. Anurag Basu took on this task with care and respect, ensuring that the spirit of the stories was preserved while making them accessible to today's viewers.
Anurag carefully selected many storylines, like Chokher Bali, Charulata, Kabuliwala, Detective, Samapti, Chutti, etc., and produced a piece of distinctive background music for each one. The stories were translated in his unique style. Each novel received two or three episodes, whereas short stories were each given one episode. Each of these stories was connected to the next in a natural way by the director.
In 26 episodes, each lasting 60 minutes, the show explored more than 14 stories.
To strengthen the show's time slot, the EPIC Channel created the marketing campaign "Epic at 10." A phrase was created to represent the show's 10 o'clock airtime.
