Grahan has come under fire for allegedly inventing facts and giving an erroneous account of several occurrences. In particular, several Sikhs have objected to how the show portrays the anti-Sikh riots, saying that it fails to adequately capture the brutality and pain that Sikhs went through at the time.
Nonetheless, some detractors claim that Grahan glorifies the riots and gives the violent offenders a sympathetic portrayal. They contend that the show falls short in appropriately addressing the part played by the government and law enforcement in the violence against Sikhs.
A court in Bihar served Disney+ Hotstar and the creators of Grahan with a notice in March 2021 instructing them to reply to a complaint that had been lodged against the programme. In the complaint, it was claimed that the show's content had harmed the Sikh community's feelings and was disrespectful to them. The court later dismissed the complaint, claiming that it had not discovered any proof of the show's creators' wrongdoing.

The popular Hindi novel "Chaurasi" by Satya Vyas, upon which Grahan is based. Both readers and critics praised the novel, which was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar in 2016.
The series was filmed on location in the Uttar Pradesh city of Lucknow. The historical architecture of the city, which is eerily similar to the structures in Delhi, the scene of the riots, was a deciding factor for the filmmakers.
Ranjan Chandel, the series' director, served as a partial inspiration for the character of Rishi, the journalist looking into the riots. Similar to Rishi, Chandel's father was a person of mixed races, and Chandel drew on his own upbringing to inspire the character's path.
Grahan includes interviews with actual anti-Sikh riot survivors, such as Jagdish Kaur, a pivotal witness in the conviction of Congress politician Sajjan Kumar. Kumar's conviction for his part in the violence was made possible in large part by Kaur's evidence.
In order to depict the linguistic diversity of the characters and the area, the series uses a combination of Hindi, Punjabi, and English. This also enhances the reality of how the events and the people touched by them are portrayed in the show.
In conclusion, Grahan is a compelling and moving online series that explores the anti-Sikh riots of 1984, a contentious and sensitive subject. The show sensitively and nuancedly depicts complex characters who are juggling both personal and political challenges. Grahan has received high appreciation for its powerful performances, accurate depiction of the events and individuals, and its examination of issues like justice, trauma, and identity in spite of some controversy and criticism. Overall, it is a strong and thought-provoking series that serves as an effective reminder of the significance of recalling and facing the past.
