At one point, Saajan helps Shaikh keep his job by making up for his egregious errors, and he later serves as the best man at his wedding. Ila gives up on trying to save her marriage after learning that Rajeev is having an affair.
In one of the lunchbox letters, she advises relocating to Bhutan, where the cost of living is far lower than in India. Saajan responds with an offer for the two of them to relocate together. Ila then agrees to meet at a well-known restaurant in person, but Saajan does not arrive at the scheduled time. The following day, after receiving an empty lunchbox, Saajan writes to the disappointed Ila to apologize and explain that he arrived and saw her from a distance but was unable to approach her. He describes how youthful and lovely she is, then speculates that he is too old for her and counsels her to move on.
Sometime later, Ila's father, who was battling lung cancer, dies in the care of her mother, who admits how unhappy her marriage was. Ila learns through Sheikh that Saajan has retired and is moving to Nashik after receiving Saajan's office address. She informs Saajan in a final farewell letter that she will leave Rajeev and move to Bhutan with her small daughter. Saajan, in the meantime, changes his mind and returns to Mumbai. As Ila waits for her daughter to come home from school, Saajan and the dabbawala, who frequently pick up and deliver the titular lunchbox, make their way to Ila's house.

In addition to praising Irrfan Khan and Nimrat Kaur's acting, Variety termed it "a notable debut from tyro helmer-scripter Ritesh Batra" for making a movie with "crossover appeal of Monsoon Wedding."

Max Richter wrote the soundtrack, and C.K. Muraleedharan was in charge of the cinematography. Max Granger and Nicholas Gibbons edited the movie. The Lunchbox received high marks from critics and was praised for its original plot, performances, and directing.
Saajan- Saajan is a quiet, reclusive man who has spent a lot of time alone after the death of his wife. He is close to retiring and is having a hard time figuring out what his life is all about. He finds himself increasingly opening up to Ila as a result of the encouraging and upbeat letters she writes to him. Despite his initial mistrust, he values their friendship and begins to view the world differently.
Ila- Ila is a tenacious, upbeat woman who doesn't mind taking risks. She tries to make their marriage work despite her husband's disregard. She enjoys cooking and is proud of her abilities. She is also inquisitive and open-minded, which prompts her to write to Saajan.
Several people believed The Lunchbox to be India's selection for the 86th Academy Awards Best Foreign Film Category throughout the course of the year because many critics praised it ardently and cast their votes for it to be the representative movie. Karan Johar, the film's director, also endorsed it, saying, "All kinds of audience can connect with it and yet within the parameters of love story it is completely unusual. You feel all the love in the world for the protagonists and the unusual aspect of it is they haven't met."
On September 17, 2013, the Film Federation of India (FFI) selection committee opted to send the Gujarati film The Good Road in its place. Many supporters of The Lunchbox, including the cast and crew, were outraged by this choice. Anurag Kashyap, the film's producer, instantly expressed his displeasure on Twitter, writing, "I don't know who the Federation is, but it goes to demonstrate the complete lack of knowledge to develop pictures that can travel across borders."
The Lunchbox made 71 million dollars in its first weekend of release and 110 million dollars in its first week in India. The movie made a sizable amount of money over the following few weeks, taking in over 200 million in the first three weeks and an additional 40 to 50 lakhs on its fourth weekend, according to estimates.
The Lunchbox was 2014's third highest-grossing foreign film in the United States after Cantinflas and P.K., with domestic box office receipts of $4.23 million. The movie had made 84.92 crores globally as of May 28, 2014. Over the course of its theatrical release, the movie made a total of US$17.24 million (100.85 crores). After Dhoom 3 and Chennai Express, it was the third highest-grossing Indian movie abroad in 2013. The majority of its revenue came from outside. Up to it, it was Irrfan Khan's highest-earning Hindi movie up until it was surpassed by Hindi Medium (2017).
