Sanjay's father, Sunil Dutt, intends to begin his acting career in Bollywood with the movie Rocky (1981). Sanjay is pushed to experiment with drugs for the first time by his friend Mistry after becoming upset about his father's domineering behaviour on set. Soon after, Sanjay learns that his mother, Nargis has cancer and is being treated in New York. His deterioration into drunkenness and drug addiction is accelerated by this experience. In New York, he meets Kamlesh, a devotee of Nargis, and they quickly grow close. The relationship between him and his girlfriend, Ruby, eventually ends due to his persistent drug use.
Three days before Rocky is released, Nargis dies, which emotionally drains Sanjay. Sanjay consents to enroll in a rehab facility in the United States, and with the aid of his father and Kamlesh, he eventually makes a full recovery. He meets Mistry when he gets back to India and beats him for giving him drugs.
Kamlesh, who is now distanced from Dutt, recounts the latter part of his life once Winnie finds him. Sanjay's career in Bollywood drastically increased during the 1990s when he starts bodybuilding. Once the Babri Mosque was demolished in 1992, Sanjay purchases three AK-56 guns to protect his sister Priya Dutt and father, who had, by this point, entered politics. Shortly after, Mumbai became the scene of numerous bombings. In 1993, Sanjay is detained for having illicit weapons that were allegedly provided by the D-Company for use in trafficking in order to provide security during probable riots after the bombings. The five-year prison term and conviction of Sanjay endanger his professional future. His reputation is further damaged by the Indian media's characterization of him as a terrorist. Kamlesh breaks off contact with Sanjay since he thinks he's guilty.
After his 1997 release, Sanjay makes an appearance in a number of mediocre films. As his popularity started to decline, he was cast in the lead role of Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (2003), which also starred his father. As a result of Sanjay's performance, he receives a Filmfare Award, and his reputation grows, pleasing his father. His father dies shortly after that. In accordance with the Possession of Weapons Act, the Bombay High Court convicts Dutt guilty in 2006. He is briefly detained twice between 2005 and 2007 but is released on bond, allowing him to work in movies. He is detained once more in 2013 as a result of the Indian Supreme Court's ruling. By blaming the media for wrongly accusing him of being a terrorist, he persuades Winnie and Kamlesh of his innocence. As a result, he is later freed from prison in 2016 due to good behaviour.
Sanjay and Kamlesh put things right, and Sanjay learns that Winnie has finished writing his biography, which is called Kuch Toh Log Kahenge, after one of his father's favourite songs.
On April 24, 2018, a brief official teaser for the movie was made accessible online on Netflix and Hotstar. With more than 30 million views in the first 48 hours of its release and 150 million views overall across various social media platforms, it became the most-watched Hindi film teaser of all time. In the first 24 hours after its release on May 30, 2018, the official trailer received over 20 million views.
On April 30, 2018, the first poster for the film appeared, featuring Kapoor as Sanjay Dutt shortly after his 2016 release from prison. Another poster with a different still of Kapoor as Dutt exiting Yerwada jail in 2016 was unveiled the next day. Other posters portraying Kapoor as Dutt from the 1990s and 2003, when the movies Rocky and Munna Bhai M.B.B.S, respectively, were released, followed.
The movie was released in theatres on the 29th of June, 2018.
Ranbir Kapoor's performance as Sanjay Dutt is widely considered one of the best of his career, and the film was a commercial and critical success. It was praised for its engaging narrative, strong performances, and emotional depth.
The Times of India's Rachit Gupta gave the movie four out of five stars and added, "Whether he’s dancing like a hysterical man under the influence of drugs or he’s the broken, emotional wreck just staring blank, Ranbir portrays a variety of emotions and grey shades with flair." Although praising Kapoor's acting and Hirani's directing, NDTV's Saibal Chatterjee stated that "other actors scramble to keep up, especially Rawal.”
Sanju has a rating of 7.6 stars on IMDb.

On January 12, 2017, Ranbir Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, Dia Mirza, and other members of the cast and crew started filming the movie. The final day of filming was January 21, 2018. The cast and crew at the wrap party were seen sporting custom T-shirts with the hashtag "#duttstheway" to advertise the movie.
The film received some criticism for its alleged whitewashing of Sanjay Dutt's controversial life and actions. Some people felt that the movie presented a one-sided and overly sympathetic portrayal of the actor and that it downplayed the seriousness of his criminal charges.

In India, it was shown on 4000 screens, and it was also shown on more than 1300 screens abroad.
