The movie tells the story of Akash and Kiara, two strangers who meet on the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City, both attempting to commit suicide on the same day. However, they end up saving each other's lives and strike up an unlikely friendship.
Akash has declared his firm bankrupt and needs $12 million to pay the shareholders, but a stock market meltdown prevents him from getting a loan. He makes the decision to jump off the George Washington Bridge. After discovering her fiancé Kunal having an affair, Kiara also decides to commit suicide at the same place. Akash and Kiara make an effort to commit suicide, but the Coast Guard stops them.
The two make five unsuccessful attempts to end their lives. They ultimately agreed to take their lives on December 31, 2009. They make the decision to start their journey together with 20 days remaining before their deadline in order to satisfy their unfulfilled dreams.
As they spend more time together, Akash and Kiara start to develop feelings for each other. However, they both decide not to pursue a romantic relationship as they know their time together is limited.
On their final day, they set out to drown together, just as they had planned. Akash throws a beer bottle with a note inside before proposing to Kiara. Kiara takes it and begins to read it. She agrees, startled, and the couple kisses while the Coast Guard rescues them. After two years of marriage and a son who is two years old, Akash and Kiara are shown in the closing credits.
Since the major actors Ranbir and Priyanka were making their film debuts, Anjaana Anjaani was one of the most anticipated movies of the year. The media received exclusive stills from the movie on October 4, 2010. On August 6, 2010, Priyanka Chopra posted a one-minute teaser trailer to her Twitter page. Both critics and viewers gave it favourable reviews.
The original release date for Anjaana Anjaani was set for September 24, 2010. As this would overlap with the sensitive Ayodhya dispute ruling, which many feared would be disputed and cause instability in the country, it was postponed by one week, barely four days before the intended date. Commercial experts opposed delaying the movie and questioned Nadiadwala's move because the government had already taken security measures in light of the Commonwealth Games' arrival. Also, Anjaana Anjaani's success at the box office could have suffered if the release date were changed because it would conflict with the high-profile science fiction movie Enthiran, starring Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai. The film was nonetheless delayed until October 1st, 2010.
The film received mixed reviews upon its release. One of the strengths of Anjaana Anjaani is the chemistry between its lead actors, Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra. They deliver heartfelt performances and have great on-screen chemistry, which is essential for a romantic comedy. The film also features some beautiful locations in New York, which are captured well by the cinematographer.
The music of Anjaana Anjaani is a mixed bag. While some songs like Aas Paas Khuda and Tumse Hi Tumse are melodious and enjoyable, others feel forgettable.
The movie received a 4 out of 5-star rating from Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama. The Times of India gave the movie a 3 out of 5-star rating while praising the lead actors' on-screen chemistry as being energetic, honest, and realistic. IMDb gave the movie a rating of 5.7.

The casting for Anjaana Anjaani was a long process. The filmmakers wanted two actors who could pull off the complex and layered characters. Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra were selected for the lead roles after much deliberation. The movie was shot in various locations, including New York, Las Vegas, and San Francisco. The filmmakers wanted to capture the essence of each location and showcase it on screen.
Anjaana Anjaani has encountered issues due to a movie review that was utilised in its advertising. When the article really appeared in the local publication The Harrow Observer, producers mistakenly claimed that The Observer was the source of the sound byte.
Devansh Patel, the film journalist, stated, "I wrote this review which you refer to for the Harrow Observer, which is from the Trinity Mirror Group." He clarified, "There are two ways of looking at this. Either I write, 'Devansh Patel from Harrow Observer'. Or then, I write, 'Devansh Patel, Observer (Trinity Mirror Southern).”
"You know what the problem is? Many people have called me and asked if I write for The Observer, owned by Guardian Media Group, and I usually clarify. But I have no contact with any producers."
Producer Sajid Nadiadwala, however, asserted that he was not in charge of approving the quotation "This ad has not gone through me. It must have gone through either [DVD retailer] Eros or some distributor."
