Introducing Adipurush: A Mythological Action Epic that Strives to Recreate the Ramayana

Adipurush is an Indian epic mythological action film released in 2023, directed and written by Om Raut. The movie is a grand retelling of the timeless Indian epic, Ramayana. Produced by T-Series and Retrophiles, the film features a star-studded cast including Prabhas, Saif Ali Khan, Kriti Sanon, Sunny Singh, and Devdatta Nage.

Announced in August 2020 through an official motion poster, Adipurush embarked on its ambitious journey. Principal photography commenced in February 2021 and concluded in November 2021, with most of the filming taking place in Mumbai. The music for the film is composed by the renowned duo Ajay–Atul. Notably, Adipurush boasts a whopping budget of ₹500 crore (approximately US$63 million), making it one of the most expensive Indian films to date.

Upon its release on 16 June 2023, Adipurush received mixed reviews from critics and audiences. While the film faced heavy criticism for various aspects, including Om Raut's direction, dialogue writing, CGI/VFX usage, action sequences, the modernization of the epic, portrayal of the character Lankesh, colour grading of Lanka, the physical appearance of Raghava, editing, and its 179-minute runtime, there were some redeeming qualities. The performances of the cast, particularly Prabhas, Saif Ali Khan, and Devdatta Nage, garnered praise, as did the musical score and soundtrack.

However, amidst the mixed reception, numerous critics labelled Adipurush as a terrible and unnecessary adaptation of the Ramayana. They argued that it failed to capture the essence of the original source material, deviating significantly from its core narrative.

With its grand scale and attempt to recreate the timeless tale of Ramayana, Adipurush remains a cinematic endeavour that has sparked both fervent debate and appreciation among audiences and critics alike.

Adipurush's story is inspired by Ramayana which happened 7,000 years ago. With the support of Hanuman's army, the king of Ayodhya, Rama, travels to the island of Lanka to rescue his wife Sita, who Ravana, the king of Lanka, has kidnapped.

The film Adipurush is scheduled to release in theatres on 16 June 2023. It opened with throngs of people lining up to watch the movie. It was loved and adored by the audience. The movie was made with a budget of 550 crores and earned a box office collection of 85 crores. It has a runtime of 2 hrs 59 minutes. 

Reviews

Adipurush has seen a mixed reaction from the audience. On one hand, many consider the movie a cinematic masterpiece and on the other hand some complain about the production not doing good work regarding the animation and VFX. Currently, the movie has a rating of 2.7 on IMDB.

Jai Shri Ram by Ajay-Atul - Adipurush's opening tune, Jai Shri Ram, is a high-pitched song that highlights significant scenes from the movie. Prabhas and Kriti Sanon star in it. Adipurush, Om Raut's much anticipated musical direction, has just released its debut track. The song's spectacular opening sequence, Jai Shri Ram, features Kriti Sanon as the kidnapped Janaki in Lanka and Prabhas as Raghava, who is preparing to go to war to save her. The song was written by Manoj Muntashir Shukla and features music by Ajay-Atul.

Controversy 

• As the teaser of the movie Adipurush released, the character of Ravan, played by Saif Ali Khan was not liked by the audiences. The majority have expressed their dissatisfaction with Raavan's appearance in the movie. 
• The mayor of the Nepalese city of Kathmandu put up a protest against the Sita being called a daughter of India. The mayor said that it is widely empahasised that Sita in actuality is a daughter of Nepal. The production company have complied to the demands and censored the content.

Box Office Collection

The movie earned a whopping 85 crores in the box office in the very first day of its release. The telugu version of the movie garnered a cool 60 crores and the hindi version grossed 25 crores.
