Biography

Raghubir Yadav is an Indian actor, music composer, vocalist, and set designer who works in Hindi cinema. He made his film debut in the titular role of Massey Sahib (1985). He received two international awards for his performance in Massey Sahib: the FIPRESCI Critic's Award at the Venice Film Festival in 1986 and the IFFI Best Actor Award (Male): Silver Peacock Award at the 11th International Film Festival of India in 1987. The film also featured a writer and social activist who studied at the National School of Drama in New Delhi until 1977.

Yadav has appeared as an actor and vocalist in over 70 plays and over 2500 shows with the Parsi Theatre Company (1967-1973), touring in caravans, living in tents, and playing on improvised stages in villages, towns, and cities across India. He performed with glove puppets in the Rangoli Puppet Theatre in Lucknow (1973-1974). He performed in almost 2000 acts at the National School of Drama Repertory (1977-1986). He also helped with the music, staging, costumes, and masks.

 In the decades that followed, he appeared in a number of landmark films. Three of his films (Salaam Bombay!, Water, and Lagaan) have received Academy Award nominations for Best Foreign Language Film. Raghubir Yadav is one of just a handful Indian actors who have received the Silver Peacock Best Actor Award at the India International Film Festival. His most well-known performance was as the drug-addicted Chillum in Salaam Bombay! (1988). He appeared in Firaaq. In 2011, he starred in the film Dear Friend Hitler, which was inspired by two letters Mahatma Gandhi addressed to Adolf Hitler in 1939, just before World War II, and on Christmas Eve 1940, after the war had begun, to both prevent and end the conflict. Raghubir began his television career as the lead character Mungerilal in the 1988 television series Mungerilal Ke Haseen Sapne. Amaravathi ki Kathayein (from 1994 to 1995). Later, he portrayed Haji Nasruddin in the television series Mullah Nasruddin (also spelt Mulla Nasiruddin) and the lead in Chacha Chaudhary. He also performed the lead part in Arjun Pandit on BI T.V.

Deepak Kumar Mishra directed the series, which stars Jitendra Kumar, Raghubir Yadav, Neena Gupta, Sanvikaa, Chandan Roy, Durgesh Kumar, Ashok Pathak, Faisal Malik, and Sunita Rajwar. It follows the lives of an engineering graduate who takes a job as a Panchayat secretary in the fictional village of Phulera in Uttar Pradesh due to a lack of better work opportunities.

Lagaan

Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (transl. Agricultural tax) is a 2001 Indian Hindi-language epic musical sports drama film written and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker. Aamir Khan produced the film, and he stars opposite rookie Gracy Singh and British actors Rachel Shelley and Paul Blackthorne. Set in 1893, during the late Victorian period of India's colonial British Raj, the film follows the residents of a village in Central India, who, burdened by high taxes and several years of drought, are challenged to a game of cricket as a wager to avoid paying the taxes they owe by an arrogant British Indian Army officer. The villagers must learn a new game and compete to win.

Chacha Chaudhary is a character in Indian comic books created by cartoonist Pran Kumar Sharma. The comic has sold over 10 million copies and is available in ten Indian languages, including Hindi and English. It has also been adapted for television, with Raghubir Yadav as Chacha Chaudhary.

Maya Memsaab, Massey Sahib, Rudaali, Aasmaan Se Gira, O Darling Yeh Hai India, Samar, Sunday, Darna Mana hai, Ramaji London Waale, Billu, and Dilli 6 were among the films in which he composed and sung. Chacha Chaudhary's title song was performed by him. He performed a song named Mehngai Dayain with bhadwai village mandli in Amir Khan's Peepli Live, for which he was later hailed by many in the Indian cinema profession and the general public.He sang and acted in commercials for Pepsi, Parle, Vim, Kotak Mahindra, Icy Cool Mint, Coke, Midday, Bagh Bakari Chai, Crack cream, Maggie Mania, Britannia, and other companies. He also sung and created the popular MP tourism advertisement 'MP ajab hai, sabse gajab hai.' He wrote music for Ghasiram Kotwal, Chotte Sayeed Bade Sayeed, Chaupra Kamaal Naukar Jamal, and Chacha Chaudhary, as well as ballets for the song and theatre divisions. Maggie Mania was written, composed, and performed by Ramlila for Dilli 6.

He recently sang 'Lamh Tera' alongside Hitesh Sonik in the second episode of Coke Studio @ MTV Season 2. The show aired on MTV India on July 14, and this song was the fifth and final song to be shown. The song is a Madhya Pradesh folk tune. It used to take days to get from one location to another in ancient times. People would usually sing to assure everyone's safety while going. This was known as 'lum tera' singing. A member/group at the caravan's front would sing loudly (lambi ter), and the members/groups at the back would respond by singing back, ensuring connectedness. He sang Bhagan ke Rekhan ki bahangiya in the film Issaq. Raghubir has once again demonstrated his skills.

Web Series

In 2020, he took on the role of Brij Bhusan Dubey in the popular web series Panchayat, which has been streaming on Amazon Prime Video for two successful seasons. The following year, in 2021, he made a memorable appearance as Hakim Sahab (Doctor) in an episode of the anthology series Ray on Netflix, particularly in the segment titled Hungama Kyon Hai Barpa. Yadav's versatility continued to shine in 2022, where he portrayed Mishra Ji in Kaun Banegi Shikharwati on ZEE5 and Mohan Kumar in The Great Indian Murder on Disney+ Hotstar.
