Prakash Jha began his career in films while still in the middle of his course. In 1974, he started working independently on films and went on to make his first documentary, Under the Blue, in 1975. For the following eight years, he continued to work on documentaries.

During this period, Jha gained recognition for his politically charged documentaries. One notable documentary was Faces After Storm (1984), which depicted the Bihar Sharif riot. Despite being banned shortly after its release, the documentary won the National Film Award for Best Non-Feature Film.

In 1984, Jha made his feature film directorial debut with Hip Hip Hurray, written by Gulzar and starring Raj Kiran and Deepti Naval. However, it was his film Damul (1984) that brought him significant acclaim. The film, centered around the issue of bonded labor in Bihar, won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film and the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Movie in 1985.

 In 1986, Jha directed Parinati, based on a story by Vijaydan Detha. Throughout his career, he has directed over 25 documentaries, 13 feature films, two television features, and three television series. His production company has also collaborated with independent directors on five films.

 In 2004, Jha directed Loknayak, a film based on the life of Bharat Ratna Jayaprakash Narayan. He delved into political drama with his 2010 film Raajneeti, a modern interpretation of the Mahabharata. The film featured a star-studded cast including Ajay Devgan, Manoj Bajpai, Naseeruddin Shah, Katrina Kaif, Arjun Rampal, Nana Patekar, and Ranbir Kapoor, and was both a critical and commercial success.

 Jha's subsequent projects included Aarakshan (2011), starring Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, and Prateik Babbar, as well as Chakravyuh (2012), featuring Arjun Rampal, Abhay Deol, Manoj Bajpai, Kabir Bedi, and Esha Gupta. In 2013, he directed Satyagraha, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Ajay Devgn.

 In 2019, Jha ventured into acting with the film Saand Ki Aankh, a biographical film directed by Tushar Hiranandani. He portrayed the character of Rattan Singh Tomar, the patriarch of the Tomar family.

Movie Goliyon Ki Raasleela Sanjay Leela Bhansali wrote, produced, and directed the 2013 Indian Hindi-language tragic romantic action-drama film titled Ram-Leela. The film is produced by Neetu Chandra and Samir Kumar and features a talented ensemble cast including Ashish Vidyarthi, Kranti Prakash Jha, Ajay Kumar, Arti Puri, Pankaj Jha, and Deepak Singh. It was released on October 30, 2015.

 A 2016 Hindi-language biographical sports drama film titled M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story was written and directed by Neeraj Pandey. It is based on the life of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, a former Test, ODI, and T20I captain for the Indian national cricket team. Along with Disha Patani, Kiara Advani, and Anupam Kher, the movie also features the late Sushant Singh Rajput as MS Dhoni. The movie follows Dhoni's life from an early age through various life experiences.

 Arun Pandey, Dhoni's manager, proposed the idea for the biopic after witnessing an incident at an airport following the 2011 Cricket World Cup Final. Following two years, construction got under way with Dhoni's approval. While he was still directing Baby, Neeraj Pandey was later asked to take over the directing duties. To conduct the background and life events research for Dhoni, Pandey enlisted a number of people. Later, Dhoni was hired as a consultant for the movie.

 The film was released on 30 September 2016 by Fox Star Studios and received the widest release ever for a Bollywood film across 61 countries. In addition to being released in Hindi language, it was also dubbed in Tamil, Telugu, and Marathi languages, although the Marathi release was later cancelled due to opposition. Upon release, the film became a critical and commercial success. It is the fifth highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2016 and sixth highest grossing Indian film of 2016 worldwide ₹215.48 crore .
