Introduction

Golden Globe Awards is a prestigious annual event for the film and television industry. Awards are given to American films and television series that have excelled for the year. Besides recognising American films and TV series, Golden Globe Awards also recognises international language films and TV series. Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) presents the Golden Globe Awards once a year.

HFPA was established in 1943, and Golden Globe Awards were started in 1944. Usually, the Golden Globe Awards are held in February every year. All films and TV series premiered between the 1st of January and the 31st of December of the previous year are considered for the Golden Globe Awards. Let us say a Golden Globe Awards is being held in the month of February 2022. It means all the films and TV series launched in the year 2021 will be considered for the awards. Besides movies and TV shows launched in the USA, many foreign films and shows have been recognised over the years.

For example, Naatu Naatu won the Golden Globe Award recently for Best Original Song. It is an Indian song from the famous film RRR. Golden Globe Awards are offered in multiple film and TV categories. Besides the lead actors, many other people who work in making a film or show are also awarded. There are certain rules to qualify for a Golden Globe nomination. For example, films must have a minimum runtime of 70 minutes to be nominated for a Golden Globe Award.

Also, native films must be released in the Greater Los Angelos region for a minimum of seven days. However, foreign films are not required to have premiered in the USA to win a Golden Globe Award. However, foreign films must have a minimum of 51% dialogue in some other language than English to be nominated for a Golden Globe Award. History

In 1943, foreign journalists based in Los Angelos thought of a better way of delivering film news to people who weren’t in the USA. The plan was to establish an award ceremony similar to the Oscars and attract people living in and outside the USA. For the same rationale, the first Golden Globe Awards were organised in the year 1944. It recognised the films that were launched in the year 1943. In the next few years, Golden Globe Awards became more popular.

The venues for the Golden Globe Awards kept changing through the years. In its initial years, Golden Globe Awards focused only on films. In the year 1956, Golden Globe Awards focused on TV shows for the first time. Three different categories were launched for TV shows in the 13th Golden Globe Awards. In the year 1963, Golden Globe Awards were handed out by one or two celebrities for the first time. At that time, individuals handing out the awards to the winners were called ‘Miss Golden Globe’. However, the title was later changed to ‘Golden Globe Ambassador’.

People giving out the Golden Globe Awards were usually actors, sons/daughters of actors, directors, and other prominent individuals within the entertainment industry. Many other significant changes occurred in the Golden Globe Awards throughout the years. The Golden Globe trophy has also gone through changes over the years. For example, the gold content of the Golden Globe trophy was improved in 2009. Over the years, HFPA has collected revenue through the Golden Globe Awards.

HFPA has also made many entertainment-related donations from the revenue collected via award ceremonies. For example, Young Artist Awards receive funding from HFPA to recognise budding talent in the film and TV industry. It has been around since 1978 and recognises young artists in the film and TV industry. HFPA has introduced many new award categories for Golden Globe Awards over the years.

HFPA has also made efforts to increase the publicity of the Golden Globe Awards. Over the years, Golden Globe Awards have been telecasted in many nations. NBC (National Broadcasting Company) has been the main network partner of the Golden Globe Awards over the years. 

Theme

The main aim of the Golden Globe Awards is to recognise the best films and TV shows for the year. Since the Gloden Globe Awards started, the aim has been the same. However, the first few editions of the Golden Globe Awards only focused on the filmmaking industry. TV shows were first recognised in the 1956 edition of the Golden Globe Awards. Some awards ceremonies have a different theme every year in the USA. However, unlike other award ceremonies, the Golden Globe Awards do not have a different theme yearly.

Even though there is no individual theme for every Golden Globe Award, the platform has been used for several social issues. Celebrities and winners at Golden Globe Awards have used the platform to raise awareness on several issues over the years.

For example, many participants in the Golden Globe Awards 2018 stood up for the Time’s Up Movement. It was a movement that aimed at preventing workplace harassment in the USA. Similarly, Leonardo DiCaprio talked about climate change during his award acceptance speech at Golden Globes 2016. Some celebrities have also spoken about political issues in the past on the Golden Globes stage.

Registration

HFPA manages the registration process for the Golden Globes Awards. For films and TV shows, there is a dedicated registration process. A film or a TV show is not selected automatically for a Golden Globe Award. The producer/director of a film or a TV show must submit the name to HFPA for consideration.

A film or TV show must meet the eligibility criteria to be considered for a Golden Globe Award. A Golden Globe submission not meeting the eligibility criteria is rejected by the HFPA. Some people might wonder how to join the Golden Globe Awards ceremony. It is crucial to note that Golden Globe Awards is an invite-only ceremony, and common people cannot attend it.

Actors, actresses, award nominees, directors, and other prominent personalities are invited to the Golden Globe Awards by HFPA. You won’t find an online platform selling tickets for the Golden Globe Awards. You might not be able to attend the ceremony if you are not associated with a film or a TV show nominated for the Golden Globe Awards. • Zendaya: She is a well-known young actress known for her roles in Spiderman movies and Euphoria, an HBO drama series. She attended Golden Globe Awards 2023 and won the Best Actress in a TV Series (Drama) award.

• Priyanka Chopra- Priyanka Chopra Jonas is a producer and actress from India. Chopra is one of India's highest-paid actresses and the Miss World 2000 winner. She has won numerous awards, including two National Film Awards and five Filmfare Awards.

• Jenna Ortega: She is a young actress who has recently gained accolades for her performance in the “Wednesday” TV series. She announced the award for ‘Naatu Naatu’ as the best original song at Golden Globes 2023. 

• Shah Rukh Khan- Shah Rukh Khan, usually referred to as SRK, is an Indian actor and producer who primarily works in Hindi-language movies. He has acted in more than 90 films and is known in the media as King Khan and the Baadshah of Bollywood. He has won various honours, including 14 Filmfare Awards.

• N.T. Rama Rao Junior- Indian actor Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao Jr., better known as Jr. NTR or Tarak, primarily works in Telugu films. Rama Rao Jr. is one of the highest-paid Telugu film performers, having received two Filmfare Awards, two state Nandi Awards, and four CineMAA Awards. He has been listed on Forbes India's Celebrity 100 list since 2012.

• Ram Charan- Konidela Ram Charan Teja is a Telugu cinema actor, producer, and entrepreneur. He is one of the highest-paid Telugu film actors and has won two Nandi Awards and three Filmfare Awards. He has appeared in Forbes India's Celebrity 100 list since 2013.

On January 11, India won its first-ever Golden Globe for the song Natu Natu from SS Rajamouli's RRR. The film RRR was also a nominee for Best picture—non-English.  The historical drama Argentina 1985 by Santiago Mitre won the best picture in a foreign language award, beating Telugu Blockbuster.

Schedule

Golden Globe Awards 2023 (80th edition) was organized on the 10th of January. The ceremony was organized by HFPA inside the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The award ceremony premiered live in the USA on NBC, the official network partner of the Golden Globe Awards.

The 80th edition of the Golden Globe Awards was also streamed live on Peacock, a streaming platform in the USA. Golden Globe Award ceremony was also premiered in some other countries worldwide.
