Durga Puja is also known as Sharodotsava or Durgotsava. Shardiya Navratri has five days of celebrations called Shashthi, Maha Saptami, Maha Ashtami, Maha Navami, and Vijayadashami.
At its core, the festival is a celebration of the victory of good over evil, since it marks the time when Goddess Durga killed the monster Mahishasura. This year, the Navratri is going to start from October 3rd and will end on October 12th, 2024. Durga Puja is a part of the Navratri festival, and it is held from the sixth to the tenth day.
Why is Durga Puja Celebrated?
Durga Puja, also known as Durgotsava, is an annual multi-day festival that celebrates and worships the Hindu goddess Durga. It is celebrated worldwide by the Hindu communities, But it is particularly loved and celebrated in West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, Tripura, Odisha, Jharkhand, and eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh and the countries of Bangladesh.
Durga Puja is a celebration of how Goddess Durga defeated the bull demon king Mahishasura. It is a sign that good will always win over evil. Mythology says that the gods called on the goddess Durga to defeat Mahishasura, whose growing power was threatening to disturb the balance of the universe.
During the last five days of Navratri and Dussehra in the Hindu lunar month of Ashvin (September or October), people celebrate Durga Puja ( दुर्गा पूजा ). which begins on Maha Shashti, (sixth day), Saptami (seventh day), Ashtami (eighth day), Navami (ninth day), and last until Vijayadashami also called Dashami, the tenth day.
The story of Durga and Mahishasura shows that good will always win in the end. So, Durga Puja is more than just a religious festival; it is also a moral and cultural event where people come together to honour the goddess who represents strength, courage, morality, and motherhood. Durga Puja reminds people of these good qualities and spreads the word truth and righteousness always wins.
