International Men's Day 2024 theme
Every cycle of International Men's Day brings a unique theme, highlighting different aspects of men's roles, lives, and experiences. However, for the year 2024, the theme has not been unveiled yet. We eagerly anticipate what the focus of our celebrations on this important day will be when it is announced.
History of International Men's Day
International Men's Day (IMD) was first inaugurated in February 1992 by Thomas Oaster, a professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. However, it was only formally adopted and globally approached on November 19th from 1999 onwards. The person responsible for reincarnating and promoting it worldwide was Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, a history professor at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago.
Dr. Teelucksingh chose November 19th to honour his father's birthday and also to commemorate the 1989 soccer event, which was a significant cultural occurrence in his country.
The objective behind IMD was and continues to be the highlighting of issues faced by men on a global scale. The day is dedicated to celebrating positive male role models and their contributions to society, family, marriage, and childcare. It aims to promote basic humanitarian values, focusing on men's health, improving gender relations, promoting gender equality, and recognizing positive male role models.
Since its inception, every year the celebration carries a different theme to tackle various issues or subjects related to men’s life and experiences. Over time, International Men's Day has gained traction and is now marked in over 70 countries around the world.
International Men's Day significance
International Men's Day holds great significance as it serves several important functions aimed at celebrating, supporting, and furthering men's well-being and positive influence in the world. Here are six pillars that emphasise its importance:
Highlighting men's issues: IMD raises awareness of the challenges and issues faced by men and boys, such as mental health, physical health, workplace issues, and societal expectations.
Celebrating positive role models: The day acknowledges and honours the contributions of men who make a difference as fathers, sons, brothers, partners, friends, and community members by setting positive examples.
Gender equality: International Men's Day complements International Women's Day (March 8) to encompass both genders and support an inclusive environment, promoting gender equality and equitable treatment for all.
Supporting men's wellbeing: IMD encourages discussions around various aspects of men's wellbeing, such as emotional and mental health, work-life balance, and the importance of self-care, which are often overlooked aspects of men's lives.
Strengthening relationships: The day promotes healthy bonds between men and their families, friends, and communities by recognizing how men positively shape the lives of those around them.
Breaking stereotypes: IMD addresses traditional masculinity and encourages men to discover their strengths and potential beyond societal norms, breaking down stereotypes and fostering new perspectives on male identity.
By elevating the conversation about men's issues, their contributions, and their potential, International Men's Day underscores the crucial role men play globally and helps to create a more balanced, equal, and understanding society.
