The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) established the Indian Premier League in 2007, based on the Twenty20 format of the game. Eight teams participated in the inaugural tournament held in April – June 2008. On February 20, 2008, the teams representing India's eight different cities were auctioned off in Mumbai. The Kolkata team was eventually purchased by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan's company Red Chillies Entertainment in collaboration with actress Juhi Chawla and her husband Jay Mehta for $75.09 million, which was approximately 2.98 billion at the time.
Sourav Ganguly, former captain of the Indian national team, West Bengal native, and current President of the BCCI, was named the team's Icon player. The team's name is a nod to the popular 1980s American television series Knight Rider. The team's ownership group purchased a stake in the Trinidad and Tobago Red Steel of the Caribbean Premier League in June 2015, and renamed them the Trinbago Knight Riders in 2016.
The team also made an investment in the upcoming American T20 league Major League Cricket in December 2020. Venky Mysore, CEO of the Knight Riders Group, announced their entry into the South African T20 league with Cape Town Knight Riders in 2021, as well as their intention to invest in the ECBs new competition format, The Hundred.

However, in the third season, the black background was replaced with purple. The current logo, which features a blazing purple Corinthian helmet trimmed with gold and Kolkata Knight Riders written within a shield, was introduced in 2012.
In the fifth episode, however, it was replaced by 'New Dawn, New Knights.' During the first two seasons, the team's official colours were black and gold. Khan stated at the time that 'golden represents the spirit of life, and black represents the Goddess Kali.' During the third season, it was changed to purple and gold and remained that way. Manish Malhotra, a Bollywood fashion designer, designed the jersey.
