The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup began with the need to give fast-paced cricket to fans.
Some sources claim that after the Benson & Hedges Cup ended in 2002, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) wanted to launch another one-day competition that could entertain the fans.
The idea to launch a 20-over-per-innings game came from here.
The first matches of the Twenty20 were held in England and played between the English counties.
The event's popularity caught up with other cricket boards, who created their Twenty20 matches. The first ICC Men’s T20 World Cup tournament was held in 2007 in South Africa and won by India.
In 2014, ICC expanded the tournament to feature 16 teams instead of 12. It was again expanded in 2021 to include 20 teams. So, the tournaments that will be held in 2024, 2026, 2028, and 2030 will be played between 20 teams instead of 16.
The ICC Executive Committee decides the host country for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
The countries interested in hosting the event must submit a bid to the ICC. Australia, which won the 2021 championship, hosted the latest edition (2022). The hosts for the subsequent four editions are as follows.
2024 Edition: United States and West Indies
2026 Edition: India and Sri Lanka
2028 Edition: Australia and New Zealand
2030 Edition: United Kingdom and Ireland
Members of the ICC automatically qualify for the tournament. The remaining places are decided through the T20 World Cup Qualifier tournament.
ICC ranks teams against each other by following specific criteria. These criteria include a higher number of points, higher net run rate, lower bowling strike rate, etc. A Super Over is played to decide the winner in case of a tie.
The tickets for ICC Men’s T20 World Cup are not yet available. They are expected to be available a few months before the tournament begins.
