The Hockey World Cup began in 1971. Pakistan's Air Marshal Nur Khan was the first to propose the Hockey World Cup. He approached the FIH with his concept through Patrick Rowley, the founding editor of World Hockey magazine.
At a meeting in Brussels on April 12, 1970, the FIH Council adopted their proposal. The FIH agreed that the first World Cup would occur in Pakistan in October 1971. That first event, meanwhile, couldn't be held in Pakistan due to political reasons. Due to the unfavorable political climate, the FIH decided to move the first Hockey World Cup to the Real Club de Polo fields in Barcelona, Spain.
The smallest World Cup ever featured ten countries in 1971. In 1978, fourteen nations competed in the Cup. Sixteen nations participated in 2002 and 2018. Twelve nations have competed in the remaining 10 World Cups. The Hockey World Cup has had a qualification round every year since 1977.
India, known as the Land of Hockey, has a long history with the sport, and the Indian national team, nicknamed the Men in Blue, has a large fan base and enjoys a lot of support from the country during the event.
India won the World Cup in 1975. However, the team's record in recent years has been inconsistent, and India was eliminated from the Hockey World Cup 2023 after losing 5-4 on penalties to New Zealand in a thrilling game.
