History of Franchise

The International Premier League (IPL) is a cricket league organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and supported by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The inaugural tournament was held in April-June 2008, with the BCCI finalising a list of eight teams that participated. The teams represented eight Indian cities, including Delhi. On 20 February 2008, the teams were auctioned off in Mumbai, and the Delhi team was purchased for US$84 million by the property development company GMR Group.

GMR sold a 50% stake in the Delhi Daredevils to JSW Sports in March 2018 for 550 crore (US$69 million). The teams name was changed from the Delhi Daredevils to the Delhi Capitals in December 2018.

Parth Jindal, co-owner and chairman of the team, explained why the name was changed: Delhi is the power centre of the country, it is the capital, so the name Delhi Capitals. The new name symbolises Delhis identity, and we aim to be the centre of all action going forward, said co-owner Kiran Kumar Grandhi.

Team History

2008

The Delhi Daredevils won their first two matches in the inaugural IPL against the Rajasthan Royals and the Deccan Chargers. After losing to Kings XI Punjab, the team won its next two games against Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings.

However, the Delhi Daredevils lost four consecutive games before breaking the streak with a victory over the Deccan Chargers. After another loss to Kings XI Punjab, they recovered and won three games to finish in the leagues final four. The Delhi Daredevils were defeated in the semi-finals by the eventual champions, the Rajasthan Royals.

2009

DC.Tring

The Delhi Capitals, formerly known as the Delhi Daredevils, are one of eight franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Delhi Daredevils had a successful season in 2009, finishing third in the points table and qualifying for the semi-finals.

Delhi began their campaign with a comfortable victory over Kings XI Punjab, captained by Gautam Gambhir. They suffered a setback in their second game, however, as they were defeated by the Kolkata Knight Riders. In their next game, the Daredevils defeated the Royal Challengers Bangalore in a high-scoring affair.

The Delhi Capitals fourth game was against the Chennai Super Kings, and they won by a score of 9 wickets. They maintained their winning streak against the Rajasthan Royals, with AB de Villiers scoring a match-winning 105*.

Delhi faced the Mumbai Indians in their sixth game and were defeated by 19 runs. They quickly returned to winning ways, however, defeating the Deccan Chargers in their next game. Due to rain, Delhis next game against the Kolkata Knight Riders was called off, and they shared the points with their opponents.

Delhi faced the Kings XI Punjab in their final group stage game and were defeated by 6 wickets. Despite the defeat, they finished third in the points standings and advanced to the semi-finals. In the semi-finals, Delhi faced the Deccan Chargers, but they were no match for the eventual champions, losing by 6 wickets. However, Delhi had a relatively successful season, with Gautam Gambhir and AB de Villiers among the teams top performers.

2012

Because the Kochi Tuskers Kerala were disbanded, each team played the remaining eight teams twice, once at home and once away. As a result, each team competed in a 16-game season. After finishing last in the 2011 IPL season, the Delhi Daredevils showed a new side in the 2012 season. They came back strong, having signed Afro-English batting legend Kevin Pietersen, Sri Lanka batter Mahela Jayawardene, and New Zealand batter Ross Taylor.

They finished first in the Pool Table, with the Kolkata Knight Riders second, the Mumbai Indians third, and the defending champions Chennai Super Kings fourth, qualifying for the Champions League Twenty20 in South Africa in 2012. Glenn McGrath, an Australian pace bowler, quit playing for Delhi after being dissatisfied with his lack of selection for the entire season. Former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardane was named the new captain of the Delhi Daredevils after Indian opener Virender Sehwag stepped down during the 2012 Champions League Twenty20 season.

2013

In the year 2013, the Delhi Capitals, formerly known as Delhi Daredevils, had a disappointing season in the Indian Premier League (IPL), finishing last in the points table. Under the captaincy of Mahela Jayawardene, Delhi started their campaign with a narrow victory over the Kolkata Knight Riders. However, they suffered a heavy defeat in their next game against the Rajasthan Royals, with Shane Watson scoring a century for the opposition.

Delhis third game was against the Sunrisers Hyderabad, and they suffered another loss, this time by 3 wickets. They continued their losing streak in the next game against the Mumbai Indians, who won by 44 runs. In their fifth game, Delhi faced off against the Chennai Super Kings and suffered a humiliating defeat, losing by 86 runs. Delhis next game against the Kings XI Punjab was abandoned due to rain, and they shared the points with their opponents.

In their next three games, Delhi suffered defeats against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, Pune Warriors India, and the Kolkata Knight Riders. Despite some individual performances from the likes of David Warner and Morne Morkel, Delhis inconsistent team performances led to their downfall. In their final group stage game, Delhi faced off against the Mumbai Indians and suffered a defeat by 9 wickets. The loss meant that Delhi finished last in the points table and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

2014

The Delhi Daredevils announced on 10 January 2014, ahead of the IPL 2014 auction, that they would not retain any players from their current squad for season seven[citation needed]. With no players retained, the team had the most right-to-match cards at the auction, with three. They had Rs 600 million (approximately US$9.6 million) to spend at the auction as well.

In 2014, the Delhi Daredevils had yet another disappointing season. They lost their first game against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, but won their next game against the Kolkata Knight Riders. This was followed by a defeat against the two-time champions, the Chennai Super Kings, and a close defeat against the Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The Delhi Daredevils defeated the Mumbai Indians in their next match, limiting them to 125 runs. When the tournament was relocated from the makeshift venue in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to India, Delhi dropped their next nine matches. The Delhi Daredevils won only two of their fourteen matches, both of which took place at their new home in the United Arab Emirates. Despite the teams poor performance, South Africa all-rounder JP Duminy, the team captain, scored 410 runs from 14 matches at an average of 51.25, ranking eighth in the tournament. The Delhi Daredevils finished last once more.

2015

The team finished seventh in the 2015 IPL season. Due to a string of poor performances over the previous two years, they received harsh criticism from Delhi fans.

2016

In the year 2016, the Delhi Capitals, formerly known as Delhi Daredevils, had a mixed season in the Indian Premier League (IPL), finishing sixth in the points table. Under the captaincy of Zaheer Khan, Delhi started their campaign with a win over the Kolkata Knight Riders, with Sanju Samson scoring a brilliant century. They followed it up with a convincing win over the Kings XI Punjab, with Chris Morris delivering an all-round performance.

However, Delhi suffered a setback in their next game against the Rising Pune Supergiants, with a poor batting display leading to a loss. They bounced back in their next game against the Mumbai Indians, with Quinton de Kock scoring a century to help Delhi secure a comfortable win. Delhi faced a tough challenge in their next game against the Sunrisers Hyderabad, but they managed to pull off a thrilling win, with Karun Nair hitting the winning runs in the last over. However, they suffered a heavy defeat in their next game against the Gujarat Lions, with Dwayne Smith scoring a century for the opposition.

Delhis next three games saw them suffer defeats against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Sunrisers Hyderabad. They managed to bounce back in their next game against the Rising Pune Supergiants, with a solid team performance leading to a comfortable win. In their final group stage game, Delhi faced off against the Royal Challengers Bangalore and suffered a heavy defeat, with Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers scoring centuries for the opposition. The loss meant that Delhi finished sixth in the points table and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

2017

DC.Tring

Delhi lost South Africans de Kock and Duminy before the tournament, placing dependence on a young batting line-up and a bowling line-up of former Indian pacer Zaheer Khan, Indian pacer Mohammed Shami, South African all-rounder Chris Morris, Aussie bowling all-rounder Pat Cummins, South African young pacer Kagiso Rabada, Indian spinner Amit Mishra, young spinner Shahbaz Nadeem, Jayant Yadav and Ben Hilfenhaus.

They lost to runners-up RCB in the first game and won by large margins against RPS and KXIP. They then lost five straight games. However, they responded by chasing 189 and 214 against defending champions SRH and GL, respectively. Sanju Samson, a Keralite, scored his first century of the season. Rishabh Pant, a local lad, made 97 against GL.

However, the Delhi Daredevils were defeated by the then-two-time champions MI by a margin of 146 runs, the largest margin of victory in IPL history. Captain and former Indian pacer Zaheer Khan suffered a hamstring injury in the middle of the tournament, forcing him to miss three matches, and young Indian batter Karun Nair was appointed as stand-in captain. The Delhi Daredevils finished the season in sixth place, with six wins (+12 points) and eight losses.

2018

Before the big auctions, each franchise could keep up to three players. They could also use Right to Match cards to reclaim two players during the auctions. Shreyas Iyer, Chris Morris, and Rishabh Pant were retained by the Delhi Daredevils. Following a conflict of interest debate, coach Rahul Dravid was forced to resign from his position as coach of India A and India U-19. Ricky Ponting was named the new coach.

2019

In the year 2019, the Delhi Capitals had a successful season in the Indian Premier League (IPL), finishing third in the points table and qualifying for the playoffs for the first time since 2012.

Under the captaincy of young Shreyas Iyer, Delhi started their campaign with a win over the Mumbai Indians, with Rishabh Pant scoring a match-winning half-century. They followed it up with a convincing win over the Kolkata Knight Riders, with Prithvi Shaw and Colin Ingram delivering strong performances.

Delhis next game against the Chennai Super Kings saw them suffer a loss, but they managed to bounce back in their next game against the Sunrisers Hyderabad, with a solid team performance leading to a comfortable win. They suffered a setback in their next game against the Kings XI Punjab, but managed to secure wins in their next three games against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, Rajasthan Royals, and the Mumbai Indians. In their next two games, Delhi suffered losses against the Chennai Super Kings and the Sunrisers Hyderabad. However, they managed to bounce back in their next game against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, with a brilliant performance by Rishabh Pant leading to a convincing win.

In their final group stage game, Delhi faced off against the Rajasthan Royals and suffered a loss, but still managed to finish third in the points table and qualify for the playoffs. In the eliminator game, Delhi faced off against the Sunrisers Hyderabad, and managed to secure a thrilling win in a Super Over, with Rishabh Pant delivering a match-winning performance. They faced the Chennai Super Kings in the Qualifier 2, but suffered a heavy defeat, with the experience of Chennai proving too much for Delhi.

2020

Hanuma Vihari, Jalaj Saxena, Manjot Kalra, Ankush Bains, Nathu Singh, Bandaru Ayappa, Chris Morris, Colin Ingram, and Colin Munro have been released from the Delhi Capitals 2019 roster. During the IPL Auction, they added Jason Roy, Chris Woakes, Alex Carey, Shimron Hetmyer, Mohit Sharma, Tushar Deshpande, Marcus Stoinis, and Lalit Yadav to their 2020 roster. Chris Woakes, on the other hand, withdrew from the tournament and was replaced by South African fast bowler Anrich Nortje. Jason Roy, the Capitals second (and second English) player to withdraw from the tournament due to injury concerns and personal reasons, was replaced by Australian bowling all-rounder Daniel Sams.

The team had a strong start to the tournament, winning seven of the first nine games. However, a run of four consecutive losses has put them in a position where losing their final match could mean missing out on the playoffs. They did, however, defeat Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final match, finishing as the second-ranked team in the league stage. In addition, a victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad in Qualifier 2 helped them reach the finals for the first time in IPL history.

They were defeated in the finals by the Mumbai Indians, the only team that Delhi could not defeat in the tournament despite playing them four times. In addition, the Delhi Capitals had their most successful season in IPL history. This season, all games were played in the United Arab Emirates.

2021

DC.Tring

The IPL season 2021 was held in India. All teams were supposed to play at neutral sites (no team played at their home ground). After Shreyas Iyer dislocated his shoulder while fielding a ball in the ODI series against England and was ruled out of the 2021 IPL season, the Delhi Capitals officially promoted Rishabh Pant to captain on March 30, 2021.

The Delhi Capitals played three games at the Wankhede Stadium, followed by two in Chennai, four in Ahmedabad, and five in Kolkata. The Delhi Capitals had won six of their eight games and were leading the points table when the season was suspended indefinitely due to a breach of the COVID-19 bio secure bubble.

2023

The Delhi Capitals have made an important announcement in advance of the IPL 2023 season. David Warner has been named captain of the team for the upcoming season, with Axar Patel serving as vice captain. The change comes after Rishabh Pant resigned as captain earlier this year. On April 1, Saturday, the Delhi Capitals will face the Lucknow SuperGiants at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.
