Spoilers

Paurashpur, the period drama series, presents viewers with various plot twists and developments. Kala, the favorite dasi of Queen Meerawati, chooses to part ways from Prince Ranveer due to his lack of action for her sake, exploring a life separate from the palace confines. The series makes an intentional effort to highlight multiple social themes such as destigmatizing dark skin, transgender rights, women objectification, and the distorted notion of liberation seen through the working courtesans of the era. The narrative hints at the entry of a new female lead possibly from a royal family and possessing warrior traits in the next season. Also, there are many complex romantic tribulations suggested for the future. Queen Meerawati, treading a path between hero and villain, is anticipated to fully embrace her darker shades, having already made enemies in Kala and Prince Aditya. The climax of the series leaves viewers wondering about the identity of Boris' assailant.

Review

Audience Review

Many viewers have criticized the heavy emphasis on erotic elements and unnecessary drama, dim lighting, and poor storyline as well as acting. They felt the show was a waste of their time and not up to their expectations. While some viewers appreciated the performances of Annu Kapoor, Shilpa Shinde, and Milind Soman, they were not enough to salvage the overall viewer dissatisfaction of the series.

Some viewers found the series to over-sexualize the time of kingships and kingdoms, which they perceived as a degradation of Indian culture. Even viewers who typically appreciate such genre felt that the show failed to make the explicit scenes intriguing or entertaining.

Tring Review

It's impossible to ignore the show's visual appeal with its elaborate costumes and royal settings. We also admired the performances of Shilpa Shinde and Annu Kapoor who brought life to their characters.

However, we struggled with the storyline, which we felt was trying to cover too many angles at once and lost focus. Many character arcs, as a result, felt rushed and incomplete. Furthermore, we found the overemphasis on explicit content overshadowed the plot and power struggles the series intended to highlight.

Paurashpur is brave in the way it addresses issues such as patriarchy and objectification, but it tries to do too much and ultimately falls short in delivering an engaging story. For us, it was like a shiny present with wrapping more impressive than the gift inside. Despite our hopes, Paurashpur didn’t completely satisfy us. It had the flair, but lacked a consistently captivating narrative.

Tring Rating: ⭐⭐⭐
