The series starts with Devi returning to high school after a difficult freshman year, still reeling from the recent death of her father and dealing with a lack of direction and purpose in her life. She is determined to turn over a new leaf and become popular, but her plans are quickly derailed by her overbearing mother and her own insecurities. As she navigates the challenges of high school, Devi is also struggling with her feelings for her long-time crush, Paxton, and a new potential love interest, Ben.
Throughout the series, Devi's relationships with her family and friends are tested as she struggles to come to terms with her father's death and her identity. Nalini's mother is overprotective and traditional and often clashes with Devi over her Americanized ways and ambitions. Devi's cousin, Kamala, is also a source of conflict as she embodies the traditional Indian values that Devi is trying to reject.
As Devi navigates her personal and academic life, she also deals with the expectations of her Indian-American community and the pressure to fit in and succeed. The series explores themes of grief, mental health, and the immigrant experience as Devi struggles to find her place in the world and come to terms with the loss of her father.

The first season has a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 61 reviews, with an average score of 7.80/10; the second season has a 94% approval rating based on 35 reviews, with an average score of 8.30/10; and the third season has a 91% approval rating and an average score of 8.50/10 based on 22 reviews. Never Have I Ever's an innovative take on the coming-of-age comedy is delightfully honest, sweetly witty, and sure to have viewers falling head over heels for lovely newbie Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, the website's critical consensus for the first season states.
The According to Rohan Naahar of The Hindustan Times, the show ike Fresh Off the Boat, but it does a much better job at blending the humour and the pathos, and he praised the depth with which Devi, Nalini, and Kamala were crafted. Additionally, Naahar commended Devi She is a real person. While rating the series 3.5 out of 5 stars and praising John McEnroe's narration, Pallabi Dey Purkayastha from The Times Of India disagreed with most other critics, claiming that the show went overboard with stereotyping and mentioned clichés circling the Indian diaspora that would have held some relevance if this were the 80s or 90s. Hilarious.
Never Have I Ever is endearing and funny. As a Pakistani woman growing up, I can't even begin to describe how incredible it would have been to watch a sitcom with a South Asian female playing the main character. Thinking about how young white girls might grow up seeing themselves portrayed everywhere is startling (in a complex manner). The scene where Devi is having coffee while wearing a sari and a white couple behind her in line asks if their child may take a photo with her for their Instagram was one of the most moving scenes for me. Mindy has such a wonderful way of guiding us, her viewers, through that incredibly uncomfortable situation.
