The principal shoot of the first season was completed in May 2018. The team shot major sequences at Delhi, bracing extreme climatic conditions, as temperatures reached 48-49 degrees Celsius. While filming the climax sequence at a National Zoological Park in New Delhi, Ronit Roy suffered major injuries, which required 17 stitches to heal. Speaking about this experience, Ronit Roy said: It was not just me but the entire unit who ran through that forest. Shooting wrapped up in March 2019.
On 16 October 2019, the series was renewed for a second season. Prior to the announcement, the crew started shooting in Delhi and Mumbai, before moving on to Nepal. However, production was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic in India; with post-production works being affected. The crew resumed shooting in July 2020 following safety guidelines imposed by the government to avoid the pandemic spread; they wrapped by the end of that month.
There are several criticisms, with viewers pointing out poor direction, a lackluster screenplay, and a lack of logic in some plot developments. Several found the second season particularly disappointing or twice as bad, calling it a poor imitation of Money Heist.
However, some praised Ronit Roy's performance and mentioned the show had a few surprising moments. There were also criticisms about the overuse of profanity and suggestions that such language didn't add value to the scenes or characters. Despite several negative reviews, a few reviewers found the series to be decent, citing the climax as surprising.
The web series Hostages is a mixed bag, offering some enthralling moments alongside certain disappointments.
Ronit Roy shines as he demonstrates his acting prowess, and the rest of the cast, especially Amit Sial and Anangsha Biswas, delivers solid performances that add some credibility to the series. The show's premise is quite gripping, and there are moments that successfully hook the audience with surprise elements. However, the series' potential is dampened by a screenplay that often lacks rigor and indulges in clichés.
The plot, while interesting, sometimes resolves into a lackluster and illogical progression. Making the story more coherent and eliminating unnecessary plot developments would have given the show a more substantial narrative punch.
In conclusion, Hostages does have its redeeming qualities, yet it falls short for those seeking a tightly woven, logically consistent, and intelligently scripted series. While there are highs thanks to some thrilling sequences and standout performances, an uneven narrative and poor direction brings it down a notch.
