Introduction 

Ghoul is the second Indian Netflix original following Sacred Games, an Indian horror streaming television drama based on the Arab folklore monster ghoul. The main premise of the tale, which is set in a dystopian future in which fascism is at its height and is set in India, involves questioning the notorious terrorist Ali Saeed in a government internment camp. What follows sets off a chain of horrible and supernatural events. Nida Rahim, played by Radhika Apte, is accompanied in major roles by Manav Kaul, Ratnabali Bhattacharjee, S. M. Zaheer, Mahesh Balraj, Rohit Pathak, and Mallhar Goenka.

The idea for the miniseries came from a dream Graham experienced. Netflix purchased the production in February 2018 after Graham decided that a lengthier format would be preferable and had it changed into a miniseries. The movie was originally intended to be the first of three films in an agreement between three production houses. Critics gave Ghoul favourable reviews, praising the actors' performances and the plot.

Story

PlayGhoul is a horror web series set in a military detention centre where prisoners are interrogated for information about terrorist activities. The story revolves around a new prisoner, Nida Rahim, who is suspected of being a terrorist. As the interrogations continue, Nida begins to experience strange and terrifying events, leading her to question her own sanity. As the series progresses, it is revealed that the Ghoul is not just a supernatural being, but an ancient entity that has been used throughout history to extract information from prisoners. It feeds on the fear and pain of its victims and is able to take on different forms to manipulate and control them.

Nida, who is revealed to have a dark past, is forced to confront her own guilt and trauma as she tries to survive the Ghoul's attacks. Along with other prisoners, she starts to uncover the conspiracy that led to the detention centre becoming a hunting ground for the Ghoul.

The Indian Express' Sampada Sharma described the show as unnerving and said it addresses social change in relation to religion in an effective and dramatic way. The series was described as atmospheric, partially frightening but entirely compelling by Swetha Ramakrishnan of Firstpost.

Ghoul is a unique type of horror that helps us realise that, sometimes, we are the real demons that we can't see or comprehend. Although many people don't believe in this stuff, which is a matter of personal belief, it suggests that it is human negative deeds that lead to the formation of evil spirits or demons. But once a certain point is reached, an enormous force steps in to punish humanity for their bad crimes.

Despite having fewer spine-chilling moments than would be typical in a hardcore horror concept, it was very effectively demonstrated in the previous episode under unavoidable circumstances. Mahesh Balraj is the most breathtaking character, followed by those played by Radhika Apte, Manav Kaul, and Ratnaballi Bhattacharjee. Watching this miniseries is fantastic.

Character Analysis

Radhika Apte as Nida Rahim

Nida is the protagonist of the series. She is a young woman who is arrested on suspicion of being a terrorist. As she is interrogated and terrorized by the Ghoul, Nida is forced to confront her own past and her role in the events that led to her arrest.

Nida is a complex and multi-dimensional character, who is driven by a desire for redemption and a need to understand the truth about herself.

Manav Kaul as Colonel Sunil Dacunha

Colonel Sunil Dacunha is a retired interrogator who is brought back to deal with the Ghoul. He is a man haunted by his past, and his past with the Ghoul.

He is a man who has seen the worst of humanity and is now regretful of his actions. He is the only one who knows how to stop the Ghoul, but in order to do so, he must first confront his own demons.

Ratnabali Bhattacharjee as Major Laxmi Das (The Ghoul)

The Ghoul is a supernatural entity that possesses the bodies of prisoners and guards in the detention centre. It feeds on fear and pain and is able to take on different forms to manipulate and control its victims.

The Ghoul is a powerful and terrifying force, but it is also a symbol of the corruption and abuse of power that lies at the heart of the detention centre.

Rohit Pathak as Captain Lamba

Captain Lamba is the head of the detention centre and the main interrogator. He is a man who is willing to do whatever it takes to keep the truth from getting out, even if it means sacrificing the lives of the prisoners. He is the one who is the most corrupted by the power he wields.

Behind the scenes

PlayMumbai-based A prison inmate manages to frighten the guards and the other inmates in a dream, according to British director Patrick Graham, who has produced a few short films. Graham captured the vision on paper and turned it into a script. Additionally, he reviewed reports from military bases in Kashmir as well as various CIA documents concerning the use of torture after 9/11 at Camp X-Ray and elsewhere. 

At his dream, he was in an Iraqi torture facility similar to Abu Ghraib. Then he pondered, What if a prisoner showed up and was creepier than the facility, the guards, and the other inmates—and there's something peculiar about him? In order to produce local language horror films in India, Blumhouse Productions, Phantom Films, and Ivanhoe Pictures announced their alliance on September 3, 2014. Ghoul, which Patrick Graham wrote and directed, is the first of three movies produced by the collaboration. The movie stars Manav Kaul and Radhika Apte.

Nida Rahim, the newly hired interrogator, was portrayed by Apte. Apte was captivated to Rahim's worldview, the tenacity of her religion, and her mentality since they were exactly the reverse of what my mentality is, according to Apte. She also enjoyed looking into her own life. Shahnawaz Rahim, Nida Rahim's father, is portrayed by S. M. Zaheer. The character of Laxmi, a prejudiced interrogation officer, is played by Ratnabali Bhattacharjee.

In June 2016, principal photography commenced. The series was filmed at a location Apte characterised as leaky, damp, and awful smelling with no sunlight for more than a month, working 14 hours a day. The dialogues were translated into Hindi after Graham had the English script translated. 

The cast participated in numerous one-on-one meetings and a 15-day scene rehearsal. Kaul underwent thorough military training and practised how to walk, talk, and wield a gun like a military member. The editor is Nitin Baid, and the director of photography was Jay Oza. The Tulip Star Hotel in Mumbai served as the setting for the filming. The motel was decorated to resemble the interrogation room in several areas.
