Apple released a teaser video for the series on June 22, 2020, as part of its Worldwide Developers Conference. The series was scheduled to debut in late 2021. Apple made the announcement in June 2021 that the premiere of Foundation would take place in September 2021.
Apple released a second official trailer and announced the premiere date as September 24, 2021 later that month. The first two episodes of the series were released, with weekly releases of the next eight episodes planned.
The first episode of the second season will air on July 14, 2023.
Based on 86 reviews for the first season, the review collector website Rotten Tomatoes reports a 71% approval rating with an average rating of 7/10. "Foundation's big-budget production and impressive performances are a sight to behold," the website's critical consensus states, "but it struggles to wrangle the behemoth that is its source material into a fully satisfying series."
The series wasn't well received by film critic Rob Bricken of Gizmodo, who stated that it could have been a lot better.
RogerEbert.com's Nick Allen believes that Foundation is "the type of sci-fi series that truly warrants being called an event".

Played by Jared Harris, hari is a brilliant mathematician and psychohistorian who predicts the fall of the Galactic Empire. He creates the concept of Psychohistory, which allows him to foresee the future of large populations. Seldon's primary goal is to establish the Foundation to preserve human knowledge and culture, thus reducing the dark age that will follow the Empire's collapse.
Gaal is a young and talented mathematician from the planet Synnax. Portrayed by Lou Llobell, Gaal is drawn to Hari Seldon's work and becomes his protégé. As an outsider to the Empire's capital planet, Trantor, Gaal's perspective provides fresh insight into the workings of the Empire and the significance of Seldon's predictions. Gaal's intelligence, curiosity, and resourcefulness make them valuable allies in Seldon's mission.
Cleon (played by Lee Pace, Terrence Mann, and Cassian Bilton) is the ruling Emperor of the Galactic Empire, represented by three clones known as Brother Day, Brother Dusk, and Brother Dawn. The clones embody the concept of eternal rule, as they are genetically identical and raised to maintain the continuity of the Empire. Cleon sees Hari Seldon's predictions as a threat to his rule and takes measures to counteract the potential consequences of the Foundation's establishment.
Salvor (portrayed by Leah Harvey) is the Warden of Terminus, the remote planet chosen as the location for the Foundation. As a skilled strategist and leader, Salvor is responsible for the safety and security of the Foundation's inhabitants. Salvor's character represents the next generation of individuals dedicated to ensuring the success of Seldon's plan, despite the various challenges and adversaries they encounter.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Apple halted production of the show in Ireland on March 12, 2020. The shooting was picked back up on October 6th.
Goyer declared on January 27, 2021, that cast and crew members could begin filming on the island after quarantining and securing special waivers from the Maltese authorities. Goyer remarked that although filming had always been intended to take place in Malta, large chunks of the production were transferred there as a result of new limitations placed in London.
On April 11, 2022, production for the second season got underway in Prague, which is located in the Czech Republic. Late in the month of May 2023, production for the third season began in Prague.
The Apple TV+ series Foundation, inspired by Isaac Asimov's iconic novel series, has not been immune to controversy, sparking passionate discussions among fans and critics alike.
While the adaptation of beloved literary works often invites intense scrutiny, Foundation's departure from the source material and the creative choices made by the showrunners have sparked debates and divided opinions.
One of the primary points of contention revolves around the reinterpretation of characters and narrative arcs. As loyal fans of Asimov's original work closely examine the series, some argue that certain characters have undergone significant changes that deviate from their established traits and storylines.
Additionally, the expansive and complex nature of Asimov's Foundation series presents a challenge for adaptation. With its intricate world-building and philosophical underpinnings, some viewers and critics have expressed concerns about the series' ability to capture the depth and nuances of the source material.
