In a specially built home that is cut off from the outside world, contestants who are referred to as "housemates" share a living space. Typically once every week, housemates are voted off until only one is left to compete for the cash prize. Contestants are constantly watched over by live television cameras and personal audio microphones while they are inside the house.
The show uses methods including a scripted, back-to-basics setting, evictions, weekly tasks, competitions set by Bigg Boss, and the "confession room" where housemates talk to Bigg Boss and suggest the housemates they want to remove. All the contestants have to follow a set of rules. These rules include speaking in Hindi, no physical violence, not leaving the house, and no sleeping until the lights are off. At least one contestant is eliminated every week. The nominees for elimination are decided by the contestants themselves. All contestants nominate two contestants for elimination, and the nominees with the maximum votes go for elimination. The final decision of elimination lies in the hands of the public.
The housemates with the most nominations are then revealed, and fans are given the chance to vote for the nominee they want to keep from being evicted through SMS or online using social media and mobile applications. The winner is determined by who is left standing. The participants are obliged to participate in chores and are given jobs by the Bigg Boss, an all-pervasive figure of authority. The challenges are intended to put the roommates' capacity for cooperation and sense of camaraderie to the test. The luxury budget is a weekly allocation that depends on the completion of specified activities and can be used to purchase luxuries in addition to the supplied necessities.

Throughout 16 seasons, Bigg Boss has been in a lot of controversies.
In Season 2, Rahul Mahajan escaped from the house by jumping over the wall.
In Season 3, Kamal Rashid Khan threw a bottle at Rohit Verma. The bottle hit Shamita Shetty, and Kamal was ejected from the house.
In Season 4, Sara Ali Khan and Ali Merchant were married in the Bigg Boss house in exchange for Rs. 50 lakhs. This was highly controversial as they were already married, and Islam forbids the same couple to remarry. In the same season, Shiv Sena activists also protested against the show because of the inclusion of Pakistani housemates.
In Season 5, Akashdeep Saigal accused Salman Khan of hitting him and ruining his career.
In Season 7, Armaan Kohli got arrested for allegedly assaulting Sofia Hayat. Kushal Tandon also got into a fight with VJ Andy, after which he was thrown out of the house. Gauhar walked out of the house as well. However, both of them reentered the show later.
In Season 8, Karishma Tanna and Gautam Gulati had a huge fight, leading to Gautam getting alienated by the rest of the housemates. Ali Quli Mirza tried to escape the house after Sonali Raut slapped him.
In Season 9, Kishwer Merchant spat in Rishabh Sinha’s food and water. Rishabh Sinha later made Kishwer walk like a dog during a task.
In Season 10, Priyanka Jagga was thrown out of the house after saying disgusting things to Lopamudra Raut and Manu Punjabi’s late mother. Om Swami was also removed from the show after he threw urine on Bani.
In Season 10, Bani J tried to strangle Lopamudra Raut during a task.
In Season 11, Salman Khan threatened Zubair Khan for using abusive language against women in the show. He also threatened to end Zubair’s career in the industry. Later, Zubair tried to leave the show by attempting suicide.
In Season 12, Deepak Thakur said disgusting things about Megha Dhade. She later threw her shoe and spit on him in revenge.
In Season 13, Rashmi Desai threw tea on Siddharth Shukla. Madhurima Tuli also hit Vishal Aditya Singh with a pan, after which she was ejected from the show.
In Season 14, fights between Rubina Dilaik and Kavita Kaushik, Vikas Gupta and Arshi Khan, and Abhinav Shukla and Rakhi Sawant, created a lot of controversies.
Season 15 was highly controversial. In the initial days, Pratik damaged Bigg Boss’ house property, after which most housemates were punished. Later, Afsana Khan tore off Akasa Singh’s shirt and kicked her. She also tried to injure herself with a knife.
In Season 16, various physical and verbal fights broke out between housemates. MC Stan tried to hit Shalin Bhanot with a vase. He also threatened Shalin that he would kidnap and assault him out of the house. Archana Gautam accidentally threw boiling water at Priyanka Choudhary while fighting with Vikkas.
'Bigg Boss,' once a favored Indian TV show, now disappoints with its perceived bias and scripted content. From turning a blind eye to inappropriate behavior to showing unfair favoritism, it has lost its charm for many viewers. The handling of contestants by host Salman Khan has also received criticism. Despite its attempts to win viewers with sensationalism, closer scrutiny reveals it as a disappointing reality show that fails to live up to its promises of real, unscripted entertainment. One can only hope for improvement in future seasons.
The user has expressed dissatisfaction with the Indian TV show 'Bigg Boss.' They feel that the show in recent years has become pre-decided, heavily edited, and biased, suggesting it's somewhat scripted. They mention a specific instance from season 13, where a contestant displayed violent behavior but wasn't reprimanded. They believe this bias extends to the selection of the finalists and possibly the winner. They also criticize the host, Salman Khan, for his allegedly oppressive attitude towards the contestants and promoting inappropriate content for views and TRPs. They relate that audience votes do not affect eliminations if fan-favorite contestants receive fewer votes. The user feels disrespect towards lesser-known contestants and highlights instances of alleged nepotism. They cite season 15 as an example of favoritism shown towards a contestant, further leading to scripted content. Based upon these faults, the user gave the show a 1-star review, viewing it as a means for generating money rather than providing authentic entertainment.
