Shah Rukh Khan as Bauua Singh - Bauua Singh's character was going to be played by Salman khan. Shah Rukh Khan was then cast in the role. In March 2016, his casting was confirmed. Katrina Kaif as Babita Kumari - an alcoholic actress, who was heartbroken because of her past experience in terms of relationship and carefree as an individual. Her character as a babita kumari showed open minded women, and successful actors. Her role as a successful actress is loved by her fans. Character development of babita throughout the movie has been well written.
One of the biggest challenges in the movie was to make Shah Rukh Khan's character as a dwarf. Starting to makeup, then height and fitting him in the frame perfectly. The whole team has to put extra efforts to shoot Shah rukh khan’s every scene from different angles, also while making sure that the character’s bubbly charm is maintained.

The zero film's producer, Red Chillies Entertainment Pvt Ltd, presented an affidavit before a division bench of justices B P Dharmadhikari and S V Kotwal, which is hearing a case filed by attorney Amritpal Singh Khalsa.
In his appeal, Khalsa asked the film's director and producers to remove sequences in which Khan is seen with a 'kirpan' (a blade or tiny dagger carried by Sikhs). The petition is in response to the film's poster, which depicts Khan in a vest and shorts, with a garland of Rs 500 bills around his neck and a 'kirpan' tied diagonally across his chest.Khalsa objected to this scenario, citing the historical and cultural significance of the 'kirpan,' which is worn after accepting the'rehat maryada' (conversion to Sikhism).
According to Khalsa, the scene has harmed the feelings of the Sikh community.
Navroze Serwai, the producer's counsel, told the court earlier this month that the petition was completely based on an erroneous assumption.
