Ved is a heart-rending narrative of love, loss, aspirations, and redemption. It tells the tale of Satya Jadhav, a cricket aspirant from Mumbai, who dreams of making it big in the Indian cricket world. His life takes a thrilling turn when he crosses paths with Nisha. Despite initial misunderstandings, they eventually grow close and fall in love. However, their love story gets thwarted by Nisha's disciplinarian Naval officer father and unfavorable circumstances that pull them apart, never to reunite as promised.
Satya spirals into depression, falling back onto alcohol and relinquishing his cricketing dreams. This is when Shravani, Satya's childhood neighbor, who has been secretly in love with him, steps in. She marries him to ease his and his father's pain, despite being aware of his lingering love for Nisha. Baits of fatherly pressure rather than love make Satya accept this marriage. He doesn't work and loses himself in past memories, becoming financially dependent on Shravani.
An unexpected discovery comes about when Satya runs into Khushi, Nisha's daughter, while selecting cricket players in Delhi. Learning about Nisha's tragic fate, he decides to honor her wish and trains Khushi as a cricketer. This mutual grief brings them together, and both Satya and Shravani decide to adopt Khushi.
During this time, Satya begins to acknowledge Shravani's deep love for him. He attempts to disconnect from his painful past and give life a fresh start, which Shravani in the beginning, misinterprets as an act for Khushi's sake. As she plans to leave for Nagpur for a job transfer, Satya confesses his love and apologizes for the pain he inflicted on her. Realizing his genuine feelings, Shravani stays back, marking the beginning of a romance that blossoms from shared adversity and a second chance at love. The movie culminates with Satya's personal and emotional journey toward realizing reciprocal love and finding his way back to his dreams.
Ved was released on 30 December 2023 in the theatre. The movie stayed over 100 days in theatres collection of over 70 crores.
Ved, a highly anticipated Marathi film of the year, disappoints slightly due to its predictability but compensates with commendable performances and aesthetics. The film marks the directorial debut of Riteish Deshmukh, who also appears in the lead role, and showcases Genelia's promising entrance to the Marathi cinema. The narrative is paced well, although the second half presents a more captivating tale than the first.
Riteish delivers a strong performance as Satya, channeling the character's angst effectively. Genelia, portraying Shravani, captivates the audience with eloquent eyes and expressive demeanor. While their Marathi pronunciation might require some polishing, the essence of their characters prevails. Jiya Shankar, as Nisha, should be applauded for exuding confidence in her debut role, despite showing some areas for improvement in her acting skills. The appearances from Ashok Saraf as the convincing father figure and Shubhankar Tawde are particularly noteworthy.
In terms of production values, the cinematography by Bhushankumar Jain deserves a special mention for its aesthetic appeal, lending the film a feel reminiscent of Hindi cinema. The music from Ajay-Atul enhances the narrative fabric, with the song Besuri, imbuing an intriguing aura around Genelia's background story.
However, the movie doesn't quite live up to expectations. With an overemphasis on character glorification rather than a robust plot, it might not fully engage the average cinephile. And, if you're not familiar with the Telugu movie Majili, which inspired Ved, you'll find the plot progression rather foreseeable.
In conclusion, if you're a fan of Riteish or Genelia, 'Ved' offers a delightful viewing experience, as it successfully showcases their charisma and the nuances of their craft. However, those seeking an intricate and fresh narrative might find it slightly lacking. The movie will particularly cater to devotees of romantic dramas who appreciate a mix of emotional depth and star performances. Despite its shortcomings, it's an enjoyable film with the potential to change the approach to Marathi cinema.
