A young professor hired as a teacher at a government school faces many challenges as he battles others who want to commercialise education.
The movie's Tamil and Telugu theatrical releases were set for December 2, 2022, however they were postponed. The movie's release date of February 17, 2023, was declared in November 2022. It was revealed that Seven Screen Studio has purchased the film's Tamil Nadu distribution rights.
The film received a rating of 3.5 out of 5 stars from Shubham Kulkarni of Koimoi, who also stated that "Vaathi is a film that overall has a big intention but it never forgets to entertain its audience." Vaathi received a rating of three out of five stars from Logesh Balachandran of The Times of India, who also stated that the movie "could have been even better" despite its straightforward screenplay. The movie has a "noble mission," but Venky Atluri's script and narration are a major letdown, according to Latha Srinivasan of India Today, who gave it a 2.5 out of 5 rating.

Despite having a production budget of only $40 crores, Dhanush's most recent movie, "Vaathi," has been a smashing hit at the box office, earning an astounding 111.15 crores worldwide and an incredible 76.85 crores in India.
With his natural performance and commanding presence on film, Dhanush is Vaathi's USP. Dhanush's inventive ideas for teaching the students are presented in fun and meaningful sequences. As he discusses social equality, a few of his exchanges are sufficient to have an influence that will stay. Samyuktha Menon, who plays Dhanush's love interest and a biology teacher, has a bright appearance and performed admirably. Ken Karunas has performed admirably, but other students also merit recognition. Dhanush and Samyuktha have a good rapport. Vaathi is a movie built on straightforward writing, but it could have been even better.
