The story of Subhedar revolves around the character of Subhedar Tanaji Malusare. The events of the story start when Subhedar Tanaji Malusare walks out of Raiba's marriage and first goes to battle to conquer the Kondhana fort. He fights like a lion during the battle, and the fort gets renamed Sinhagad after he successfully takes it.
Tanhaji Malusare was a regarded warrior and commander who served under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. He was given the title of Subhedar during his time in Chhatrapati's army. This film focuses on his contributions to Swarajya, despite the fact that he is best known for his legendary victory at Sinhagad. The movie highlights the significant contributions he made during the Sangameshwar conflict, such as supervising the construction of the Sindhudurg sea-fort while it was being built in perilous conditions and constructing roads in Tal Kokan. The film pays tribute to Tanhaji's sacrifice and the significant role he played in Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's Swarajya, which culminated in the epic Battle of Sinhagad, by depicting these aspects in the film.
Subhedar is a piece of cinematic art that takes us deep into the chapters of Maratha history, not just glorifying the valiant deeds but also shedding light on the infrastructural advancements. The performers breathe life into historical characters; Ajay Purkar excels in his portrayal of Tanaji Malusare while Chinmay Mandlekar as Shivaji Maharaj and Mrinal Kulkarni as Rajmata Jijau deliver commendable performances. However, Digvijay Rohidas as Udaybhan, although essential to the plot, lacks the expected impact.
The film's direction, under Digpal Lanjekar, is excellent, ensuring to preserve the historical integrity and humanity of the characters. The narrative is skillfully woven around the dynamic between Shivaji Maharaj and Tanaji Malusare.
Crisp animations and graphics play a significant role in re-creating the grandeur of the Maratha Empire and the epic Battle of Sinhagad. The film owes much of its immersive quality to its editing, although the pacing suffered due to the ambitious attempt to incorporate multiple storylines.
Despite the narrative stretch resulting from addressing many aspects simultaneously, the film maintains its appeal through compelling dialogue and emotional scenes meant to evoke a sense of respect for the characters and their deeds.
Subhedar will greatly resonate with those who appreciate historic biographies, engaging storytelling, and emotionally charged performances. Even audiences unfamiliar with Maratha history might find themselves enamored by the film's vivid portrayal of a monumental era. Overall, for its technical execution, representation of Maratha dialect, and memorable performances, Subhedar is worth the watch.
