Garry BH edited and directed the film; Garry is a well-known editor in the Telugu film industry, and this is his debut directorial endeavour. Sricharan Pakala produced the soundtrack, while overseas cameraman Julian Amaru Estrada directed the scenes. Under the Ed Entertainments banner, K. Rajashekhar Reddy and Charantej Uppalapati produce the film. K. Rajasekhar Reddy also tells the story, and SPY is written by Anirudh Krishna Murthy.

An R&AW agent deciphers the link between a renowned arms dealer and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose's hidden secrets, risking everything to save India from approaching disaster. The Second World War ended in 1945, but India remained under British control. The Indian National Army's leader, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, vanished. The British government maintains he perished in a plane crash, but many people believe he faked his death in order to continue fighting for India's independence.

Jai (Nikhil Siddharth), a teenage spy, believes Bose is still alive. The Indian government hires him to look into the circumstances surrounding Netaji's death. Jai is a great detective, but he is also a patriot who is passionate about India's independence. Jai goes to India, Japan, and Europe, meeting with a variety of people. He also questioned witnesses and looked for evidence.

Release

The excitement surrounding Spy began building on the 17th of April 2023, when the first look of the film was unveiled. As the release date drew closer, the anticipation reached new heights with the release of the teaser on the 15th of June, 2023. The teaser offered a glimpse into the pulse-pounding action and suspense that awaited viewers. 

Finally, on June 22, 2023, the official trailer for Spy hit the screens, intensifying the excitement to its peak. The trailer unveiled the intricate plot, unveiling snippets of the danger, thrills, and breathtaking sequences that awaited audiences. On June 29, 2023, the wait was over, and Spy hit theatres nationwide.

Reviews

PlaySpy, the 2023 Telugu spy thriller, had the potential to be a gripping international espionage film, but unfortunately, it fails to live up to its ambitious premise. While it manages to touch upon the intriguing connection between a notorious arms dealer and the hidden secrets of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, the film falls short in several key areas.

The script attempts to incorporate all the internationally relevant terms associated with spy movies, but it struggles to find a balance. One of the few bright spots in the film is Nikhil's portrayal of RAW agent Jay. He delivers a commendable performance, but it doesn't quite match his previous endeavours.

The only saving grace of Spy is its exploration of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose's story. The film succeeds in capturing the audience's attention when it delves into the mystery surrounding his absence and highlights his values. These episodes resonate well with the viewers and provide a much-needed respite from the shortcomings of the main plot.

Overall, Spy disappoints with its missed opportunities and inconsistent execution. Despite the intriguing premise and commendable performance by Nikhil, the film fails to deliver a cohesive and engaging spy thriller. It is only the exploration of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose's story that manages to salvage the movie, making it a somewhat redeeming aspect.

• Khaadir (Nitin Mehta)

• RAW Agent Subhash (Aryan Rajesh)
