In 2014, Rohit Shetty released the political action movie Singham Returns in the Hindi language. It was written and directed by Rohit Shetty, and it was produced by Ajay Devgn Films, Reliance Entertainment, and Rohit Shetty Picturez. It is a follow-up to the 2011 movie Singham and the second entry in Shetty's Cop Universe, and it takes loose inspiration from the 1993 Malayalam film Ekalavyan. Upon moving to Mumbai as a DCP, Bajirao Singham learns that Mahesh Jadhav, a member of his team, has been found dead inside an ambulance with large bags of cash. Singham resolves to find out the truth behind it, and while doing so, he runs into Satyaraj "Babaji" Chander, a strong and dishonest religious figure who has close ties to dishonest politicians, including the secretary minister of the ruling party Prakash Rao.
The movie had an international theatrical release on August 15, 2014, the day of India's Independence. It set numerous records on the first day after release. The movie, which cost 70 crores to produce, did well financially at the box office, earning 219 crores worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing Indian films of 2014.
On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, it has a 27% rating. The film is a comprehensive mass entertainer with power-packed drama, high-intensity dialogue, and towering performances as its aces, according to Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama, who gave it four stars. He Said that a long weekend and the brand value associated with it will help the movie prosper and rule the box office in the coming days. According to Rohit Khilnani of India Today, "Singham Returns is strictly for fans" and gave the film three stars. The movie received a 2.5 out of 5 star rating from Anupama Chopra of the Hindustan Times. Right-wing Hindu organization HJS requested that the film be banned from theaters before it was shown on the 15th of August, the eve of Independence Day, on the grounds that it portrayed Hindu saints negatively and thus offended religious sensitivities.
