A monarch from northern India named Dusyanta is hurrying along in his chariot as he gets ready to hunt a deer. Suddenly, a forest dweller ascetic cautions him against shooting the deer since it belongs to a nearby hermitage of a famous sage named Kanva. King Dusyanta is extended an invitation by the ascetic to visit the hermitage, which is under his guardianship. He reveals that although Shakuntala, the sage's daughter, hosts visitors, Kanva isn't home.
Shakuntala and her two friends, Anasuya and Priyamvada, are seen watering the sacred trees as the King first enters the hermitage. He watches them from the shadows and is immediately taken to Shakuntala's beauty. An agitated Shakuntala is drawn to Dusyanta the moment he makes himself known. Despite Shakuntala's modesty and shyness, the King interrogates her acquaintances about her and extends an offer to give her his signet ring.
Shaakuntalam is scheduled to be theatrically released on 14 April 2023.

Reports emerged shortly after the announcement that the producers had approached Anushka Shetty for the main part of Shakuntala, following their unsuccessful 2015 attempt to work together on the historical drama Rudhramadevi. Actress Samantha Ruth Prabhu was officially announced as the lead actress playing Shakuntala in December 2020.
Dev Mohan, a Malayalam actor, and Eesha Rebba, a Telugu actress, were approached later in the year to star in the movie. Mohan will purportedly play Dushyant, and Eesha Rebba's character is unknown. The media reported in March 2021 that Rebba had left the project for several reasons. Samantha announced on social media in March 2021 that Dev Mohan is now a confirmed part of the project as Dushyant. In the movie, seasoned performer Mohan Babu was also included. He was portraying the irritable Durvasa Maharishi, and Rebba had been replaced in the movie by Aditi Balan.
Shaakuntalam is based on a popular play Abhigyanam Shakuntalam by Kalidasa.
The film is said to be a fairytale love story between Shakuntala and Dushyant from the Adiparva of Mahabharata.
The first Indian drama to be converted into a western tongue was Shakuntala and Dushyant's Tale of Love by Kalidasa. Sir William Jones translated it in 1789. The drama was then translated into 46 languages by 1900, including Norwegian, French, Austrian, Italian, and many others.
