Rediff.com's Suparn Verma commented that the script has this no-nonsense look to it, clearly and succinctly establishing the protagonist's past, and that the movie manages to marry serious cinema with the commercial variety. The director praised the departments of direction, music, choreography, and deemed the camerawork good in parts but lacking technical finesse in addition to Naseeruddin Shah, Aamir Khan, and Sonali Bendre's acting efforts.

The script has this no-nonsense approach to it, plainly and simply outlining the protagonist's backstory, according to Suparn Verma of Rediff.com, who also believed that the movie manages to marry serious cinema with the commercial variety. He commended the departments of direction, music, choreography, and deemed the camerawork good in parts but lacking[] technical finesse, in addition to praising the acting performances of Naseeruddin Shah, Aamir Khan, and Sonali Bendre.[7]
Equally potent is Naseeruddin Shah's portrayal of infamous arms dealer Sultan. The role is given a disturbing charisma by Shah, who makes him both alluring and terrifying. Sultan and Ajay's scenes together are some of the most memorable in the movie because the two actors complement one another well and establish an intense and endearing chemistry.
It's also remarkable how Sonali Bendre portrayed Seema, Ajay's girlfriend. Bendre excels in the role of Seema because she is a loving and independent character. Her scenes with Khan are especially captivating since the two actors build a believable and engrossing romance that gives the movie depth and heart.
