Young love between Parshya, a low-caste boy, and Archi, a high-caste girl, who live in a rural village in Maharashtra, India, is the subject of the Indian film Sairat. They fall in love and plan to elope in spite of the pervasive caste barrier in their community. However, their choice to overcome caste barriers sets off a sequence of violent incidents that pose a threat to separate them. They experience prejudice and brutality from both their families and society at large as they attempt to create a life together while they are on the run. They finally go to a small town where they attempt to start over and have a new life together, but their past catches up with them and things end tragically.Sairat portrays the harsh reality of caste prejudice as well as the social pressures that young couples must deal with when attempting to overcome these hurdles. The movie also emphasises the difficulties and constraints faced by young people in rural areas as a result of societal stereotypes. Sairat is a moving and thought-provoking movie that continues to ring true with viewers thanks to its strong performances and thoughtful treatment of a socially important subject.
The movie was released on the 29th of April 2016. It was in the marathi language and a romantic comedy movie. The movie was made on a budget of 4 crores and earned a box office collection of 110 crores. The movie got a rating of 8.3/10 on IMDB. It can be enjoyed on Zee5.
"To describe it as a story of inter-caste love that ends brutally would be to do grave injustice to Manjule's portrayal of a slice of contemporary India," wrote Rochona Majumdar of The Indian Express in a favourable review.
Sairat "puts caste discrimination and caste-based violence front and centre, which have frequently been denied or ignored by mainstream Marathi films," according to Suhas Bhasme of The Wire.

Rinku Rajguru portrays Archi, a high-caste girl who defies her parents and society expectations in order to be with Parshya. She is portrayed as a young woman with a strong will and independence who isn't hesitant to question social standards. Archi's transformation from a pampered and affluent child to a lady who appreciates the harsh facts of life and is prepared to fight for what she believes in is particularly striking.
The families of Parshya and Archi in particular are well-developed and nuanced supporting characters in Sairat. They are a representation of the complicated caste and class dynamics that exist in rural India as well as the ingrained prejudices that still exist today.
