Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (RRKPK) is a Bollywood romantic drama comedy released on 28th July 2023. Directed by Karan Johar and written by Ishita Moitra, Shashank Khaitan, and Sumit Roy, the film stars Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, and Shabana Azmi. Produced by Dharma Productions and Viacom 18 Studios.
The principal photography of Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani began in August 2021 and continued through March 2023 before coming to an end. The movie was shot in several different locations, including Mumbai, New Delhi, Russia, and Jammu and Kashmir. The film's musical composition is credited to Pritam, while the cinematography is overseen by Manush Nandan.
Rani, a passionate news anchor of Bengali heritage, and Rocky, a usually tough, talkative Delhi guy who walks around with a protein shake in hand, meet after Rocky's grandfather, a sufferer of Alzheimer's disease, begins to scream out the name of Rani's grandmother. Rani and Rocky, in an effort to bring the two together, crossed wires.
Rocky's family and their business have a muscular structure in contrast to Rani's refined, gentle Bengali ancestry. His side is a more conventional representation of the Indian family, run by a rigid and stubborn matriarch. As the two come up with the ridiculous concept of settling with each other's families by staying with them, cultures, egos, and beliefs about masculinity and romance clash.
Release
Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani was released in theatres on July 28th, 2023. The movie was supposed to be out on February 10th, 2023, and then again on April 28th, 2023, however the release dates were pushed back because the filming took longer than expected.
The trailer, was on the 4th of July, gives audiences a glimpse into the captivating world of Rocky and Rani. The chemistry between the lead pair shines through as the story unfolds.
Reviews
Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani attempts to deliver the quintessential Bollywood masala film, but unfortunately falls short of reaching its full potential. As Karan Johar's directorial comeback after a lengthy hiatus since Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, the anticipation surrounding the film is undeniable. However, despite the promising premise, the movie struggles to captivate the audience, leading to a prolonged and never-ending tale of romance and moral lessons.
The movie does bring back the glamour and magnificence that Karan Johar's films are known for, reminding us of a wonderful time we miss very much. Still, it has its share of problems, which become clear as the story goes on. The story takes a long time to get people interested, which makes it hard for them to get into it.
The movie tries to combine romance and social lessons, but sometimes it gets too preachy and gets in the way of the natural flow of the story. This imbalance hurts the overall watching experience in the end, leaving viewers a little bit down.
On the plus side, the movie has a group of skilled actors, like Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, and Shabana Azmi, who all bring their A-game. Their acts really stand out and give the movie a much-needed break from its flaws.
Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani tries to bring back the magic of old Bollywood pop films. It does a good job of making you feel nostalgic and grand, but it fails in terms of pace and story. Even though the film's star-studded cast does a good job, the film's preachy themes and long story make it less likely to be a memorable cinematic experience.

Dharma Productions published a video on August 1, 2022, declaring that the film had been completed with the exception of one song, the shooting of which had been postponed because Bhatt was pregnant. The music video for the song was shot in Jammu and Kashmir, bringing the production of the entire movie to a close in March of 2023. The celebration continued with the end-of-event party, snippets of which may be seen in the video.

Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani made its theatrical debut on a Friday, following the global blockbuster Barbenheimer event. During that event, Greta Gerwig's Barbie and Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer collectively earned close to a billion dollars worldwide in just one week. However, in India, interest in Barbie seemed to have decrease, while Oppenheimer continued to draw significant audiences at the box office.
In this competitive landscape, Karan Johar's Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani aimed to make a strong comeback for the director and reaffirm the value of star-power and traditional Hindi entertainment to the Indian audience. As per early predictions, the film was expected to have a solid opening day, with box office collections estimated to be around Rs 12 crore.
