Ravanasura is a thrilling crime drama that revolves around the character Ravindra, a junior lawyer working under his ex-girlfriend, Kanaka Mahalakshmi, who is notorious for mishandling cases. Ravindra is also close friends with Sekhar, Kanaka's husband. The story takes an unexpected turn when Harika Talwar, the R&D head of Syncox Pharma, seeks Ravindra's help in proving her father's innocence.
Harika's father, Vijay Talwar, has been accused of the murder of Jayaprakash, the chairman of the FDA. Ravindra takes up the case, realizing it is an opportunity to impress Harika. He starts investigating the murder and discovers that there is no concrete evidence linking Vijay Talwar to the crime. This lack of evidence, including the absence of DNA samples, strengthens Ravindra's belief in Vijay's innocence.
Meanwhile, the investigation into Jayaprakash's death is taken over by ACP Hanumanth Rao, who suspects that Vijay Talwar is being framed. His team uncovers another case involving the death of a celebrity, drawing similarities to Jayaprakash's murder. Hanumanth seeks the help of Goli Pahelwan, who witnessed the murder of the celebrity. Goli reveals that a man, Saketh, who is a prosthetic makeup artist, visited their house before the murder to take measurements for a statue at Madan Tussauds.
As the plot thickens, Hanumanth and his team trace Saketh and confront him at his residence. However, Goli Pahelwan intervenes and saves Saketh, leading them to suspect a deeper connection between the murders. Unbeknownst to everyone, Ravindra is the one responsible for the murders and is wearing a prosthetic mask resembling Goli Pahelwan.
A flashback sequence reveals that Ravindra had befriended Saketh during a previous case and became fascinated with prosthetic faces. Ravindra kidnaps Saketh's girlfriend, Jaanu, to blackmail Saketh into making prosthetic faces for him. However, Jaanu tries to escape but ends up in an accident and is severely injured. In the hospital, she desperately seeks help, but Ravindra prevents anyone from assisting her.
Dr. Dinesh becomes suspicious of Ravindra's actions and informs Hanumanth about the situation. Hanumanth discovers Ravindra's true identity as the killer and realizes that Saketh was being forced to make prosthetic faces for him. Saketh later contacts Hanumanth and warns him that Ravindra is wearing the face of Dinesh and is on his way to kill him. Unfortunately, Ravindra kills Dinesh before Hanumanth can be saved, escaping once again.
Desperate to end Ravindra's rampage, Saketh is coerced into making a prosthetic face resembling Srikanth. Ravindra, using this new face, goes to Harika's house and violently murders her, framing Srikanth for the crime. Feeling disgusted by Ravindra's actions, Saketh attempts to escape and rescue his girlfriend. However, Ravindra catches Saketh and reveals the motive behind the murders.
It is revealed that Ravindra's father had an illness, and while seeking treatment from Dr. Shanti, it was discovered that Syncox Pharma was involved in unethical human trials, causing dementia in patients. The key masterminds behind these trials were Harika, the Home Minister Mudi Reddy, and Vijay Talwar. They enlisted the help of Shekar, Narasimha Murthy, and Goli Pahelwaan to eliminate Dr. Shanthi and cover their tracks.
Enraged by the injustice, Ravindra sets out to seek vengeance against those responsible for Dr. Shanthi's death. Saketh reluctantly agrees to assist him in his mission. Ravindra begins his campaign by targeting Mudi Reddy, killing him during a political gathering and framing Mudi Reddy's henchmen, Devaraju, for the crime.
In the aftermath, Ravindra is able to successfully close the case and lives happily with his girlfriend-turned-wife, Keerthana, as justice is finally served. Ravanasura delves into the dark world of crime and corruption, showcasing the consequences of seeking revenge and the triumph of truth and justice.
Ravanasura was released in theatres on 7 April 2023 in the Telugu language. The movie total collected ₹23.1 crore. The movie was later released on Amazon Prime Video on 28th April 2023.
Ravanasura is an ambitious attempt by director Sudheer Varma to create an entertaining film that encompasses elements of drama and thriller. However, the execution falls short, leaving the viewer unsatisfied. The film suffers from a meandering plot and rushed storytelling, resulting in a messy narrative. The only saving grace of the film is Ravi Teja's performance.
Ravi Teja portrays the character of Ravindra, a junior lawyer who is not particularly good at his job. He adds charm to the film and manages to carry it on his shoulders. The chemistry between him and Faria Abdullah, who plays Kanaka Mahalakshmi, his ex-crush and boss, is enjoyable. However, the rest of the cast seems wasted in their roles, failing to make a significant impact.
The direction by Sudheer Varma is inconsistent. While the film starts off as a typical Ravi Teja entertainer, it picks up in the second half when the layers of the story are unfolded. However, certain crucial points are rushed, leaving the viewer wanting more. The attempt to bring in a predictable flashback and justify it in the name of justice feels forced and lacks emotional connection.
The animation and graphics in the film are adequate, but they don't play a significant role in the overall experience. The editing by Naveen Nooli is commendable, maintaining a good pace throughout the movie. The background score by Harshavardhan Rameshwar is a standout, adding depth and intensity to the proceedings. However, the songs by Bheems Ceciroleo feel forced and don't contribute much to the narrative.
Ravanasura is a film that could have been much more, but it falls short due to weak writing. The plot fails to consistently engage the audience, with moments of potential scattered sparsely throughout the film. The logic in the storytelling is often questionable, requiring a significant suspension of disbelief. The attempt to justify the film's title with a Ram-Sita-Ravanasura angle feels outdated and doesn't add much value.
Overall, Ravanasura is marginally saved by Ravi Teja's performance, but it is not enough to make it worth a watch. The film is likely to appeal to fans of Ravi Teja who enjoy his masala routine. However, for viewers seeking a well-crafted thriller with a cohesive storyline, Ravanasura may not meet their expectations.
