Everything changes when Surinder's happy-go-lucky wife, Taani, portrayed by Anushka Sharma, enters his life. Surinder and Taani's marriage is arranged, and while Surinder is deeply in love with his wife, Taani is still grieving the loss of her father and former lover, who passed away just days before their wedding.
To bring joy back into Taani's life, Surinder transforms himself into Raj, a fun and lively character. Raj is everything Surinder is not-confident, outgoing, and full of life. Surinder's transformation becomes complete with a stylish makeover, trendy clothes, and a flamboyant personality.
As Raj, Surinder joins a dance class where Taani is a student, hoping to win her heart and make her fall in love with him all over again. Raj befriends Taani without revealing his true identity and becomes her dance partner for a competition.
As the dance rehearsals progress, Taani finds herself drawn to Raj's charm and energy. Unbeknownst to her, Surinder quietly supports her dreams and secretly falls deeper in love with her with each passing day.
After discovering the secret, Taani is overcome by Surinder's selfless love and sacrifice and comes to understand the depth of her husband's love for her.
On December 12, 2008, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi was released in over 1,200 theatres across 30 countries around the world. Additionally, roughly 300 prints were produced specifically for the overseas market, making this the first time a Bollywood film was released on such a large scale.
A significant number of advance bookings were made for the movie before it was even released. Aditya Chopra, who is known for keeping the details of his films a secret and not exposing them to anyone until the day of release, decided to make an exception and hold a private screening at Yash Raj Studios on November 23, 2008.
The movie was met with favourable reviews upon its release. The BBC's Manish Gajjar gave the movie four out of five stars and said, "Shah Rukh Khan makes you laugh and cry as the nerdy-looking, clumsy, bespectacled Surinder and all hip and happening Raj. A true professional in his own right, Khan breezes through his dialogues during the emotional and comic scenes."
The Los Angeles Times' Robert Abele describes the movie as an "agreeably amusing comedy/romance/musical" adding, "the magnetic Khan is a skilled enough comic actor with his physical transformation—like a Peter Sellers-ish recessive turning into a Jerry Lewis extrovert—that believing Taani wouldn't notice isn't difficult."
Many critics have also pointed out the parallels between this picture and superhero movies. According to Hindustan Times' Khalid Mohamed, who gave the movie 3.5 out of 5 stars, Surinder "is a soul brother to the mousy Clark Kent-cum-Superman" that "makes you laugh and sob alternately."

Surinder Sahni, also known as Suri, is a simple and kind-hearted office worker at Punjab Power. Suri is an introverted and selfless man who loves to help others. He falls in love with Taani, a free-spirited young woman whom he ends up marrying after a sudden turn of events.
He works for Punjab Power and leads a quiet and predictable life. Suri's character is a great representation of the average person, who is kind and gentle but not exciting or flashy.
The character of Surinder Sahni is significant because he embodies the compromises and adjustments that people often make in relationships to make their loved ones happy. His portrayal gives a new dimension to the concept of love - one that goes beyond looks and style, emphasizing the need for understanding and companionship in a marital relationship.
Taani is Suri's wife and a passionate, lively, and cheerful person. After her fiance and entire family die in a tragic accident, she marries Suri to help fulfill her father's dying wish. However, she struggles to see the dull and unromantic Suri as a suitable companion.
In a tragic turn of events, she ends up marrying Surinder 'Suri' Sahni after her fiancé pass away in an accident. Further, this results in the early death of Taani's father. On his deathbed, he asks if Taani will marry Suri. She enters this marriage out of obligation and respect rather than love.
Taani's character is significant as it reflects the struggles and expectations of women in finding their happiness and identity in the confines of a conventional marriage.
Raj Kapoor is Suri's alter ego - a vibrant, fun-loving, and fashionable young man who enters Taani's life as her dance partner. Raj helps bring fun and excitement into Taani's life.
Raj is Surinder Sahni's alter ego. He is everything that Suri is not: open, enthusiastic, fun-loving, and confident. He is loud and outgoing, which is the exact opposite of Suri, who is quiet and reserved. Donning funky attire, flashy sunglasses, and spiked hair, Raj can easily be spotted in a crowd.
Raj Kapoor's lively personality not only wins Taani's friendship but also sparks a change in Surinder himself, suggesting that love doesn't involve changing oneself permanently for others but temporarily adapting to connect and understand them better.
Bobby is a cheerful, fun-loving, and friendly character. He is Surinder Sahni's best friend and a hair salon owner. Bobby is the typical funk guy with his stylish wardrobe, fun demeanor, and happy-go-lucky attitude. Vinay Pathak's portrayal of Bobby is authentic and adds a layer of warmth and humor to the film's narrative.
He helps Suri transform into Raj Kapoor so that Suri can get closer to Taani. Bobby is a supportive and caring friend who constantly guides Suri in his quest to rediscover love in his marriage.

The production of the movie started in May of 2008, and Yash Chopra was there during the shoot. A segment featuring SRK was filmed at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. The 2008 romance comedy Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi achieved remarkable success at the box office, garnering significant earnings throughout its theatrical run. In its opening week, the film collected ₹420 million (US$5.3 million), setting the stage for an impressive performance. Notably, the United States contributed $2.09 million, while the United Kingdom added $2.24 million to the film's international earnings. Domestically, it secured the second-highest position among all films released in 2008, while in the overseas market, it emerged as the highest-grossing film of the year. The dancing jodi pattern that appears throughout the movie is the well-known Raj Kapoor logo, which was inspired by a sequence starring Raj Kapoor and Nargis in the 1949 movie Barsaat.
Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte honours the legendary Bollywood actors Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, Dev Anand, and Rajesh Khanna.
Haule Haule was shot in just three takes. Most of Shah Rukh Khan's dance moves were made up as they went along. He later said that it was one of the most relaxing songs he had ever shot, even though the wig and beard made him feel weird.
The catchphrase Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte, which is heard several times throughout the film, is actually a reference to three different Bollywood films starring the three big Khans: Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (1993), starring Aamir Khan; Chalte Chalte (2003), starring Shah RukhKhan; and; Phir Milenge (2004), starring Salman Khan.
Shah Rukh Khan's favourite playback singers, Abhijeet Bhattacharya and Udit Narayan, don't perform any songs in the movie. Sonu Nigam, Roop Kumar Rathod, Sukhwinder Singh, and Labh Janjua are the male singers instead.
