Sukumar wrote and directed Pushpa: The Rise - Part 01, a 2021 Indian Telugu-language action drama film. While Rashmika Mandanna, Fahadh Faasil (making his Telugu debut), Jagadeesh Prathap Bandari, Sunil, Rao Ramesh, Dhananjaya, Anasuya Bharadwaj, Ajay, and Ajay Ghosh play supporting parts, Allu Arjun plays the title character. Muttamsetty Media makes it in collaboration with Mythri Movie Makers. The first two cinematic segments show the ascent of low-wage worker Pushpa Raj in the red sandalwood smuggling ring. Red sandalwood is a rare wood that only grows in the Seshachalam Hills of Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh.
Devi Sri Prasad wrote the film's soundtrack and music, and Karthika Srinivas-Ruben and Miroslaw Kuba Brozek, respectively, handled the cinematography and editing. The COVID-19 epidemic forced a halt to the movie's production in March 2020, which had started in December 2019. The Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad and the Maredumilli forest in Andhra Pradesh served as the primary locations for the majority of the filming, which commenced in November 2020 and ended in November 2021.
Pushpa: The Rise was released on December 17, 2021. Critics gave the movie largely mixed reviews, praising Allu Arjun, Sunil, and Fahadh Faasil's performances in particular, as well as the action choreography, cinematography, directing, and soundtrack, but criticizing the runtime, narrative, and editing. The movie did well financially, earning between 350.3 and 373 crores at the box office. The movie became the highest-grossing Indian movie in 2021 and is one of the all-time best-grossing Telugu movies.

Pushpa Raj, a laborer, decides to smuggle red sandalwood, a rare and valuable wood that grows exclusively in the Seshachalam Hills of Andhra Pradesh's Chittoor region, with his sidekick Keshava in the 1990s. When DSP Govindappa and his crew invade the jungle to grab the coolies and seize the stock, Pushpa hides it, is imprisoned, and brutally beaten for divulging the location of the wood. Pushpa eventually rises through the ranks by suggesting creative ways to smuggle the stock, earning Konda Reddy's trust and becoming his 5% partner while at the same time receiving resentment from Konda Reddy's youngest brother Jolly Reddy. Pushpa's employer, smuggler Konda Reddy, and his brothers bail him out for the stock's location.
The syndicate is run by Konda Reddy's boss, the notoriously brutal and oppressive Managalam Srinu, who also gives Konda Reddy the responsibility of protecting 200 tonnes of his contraband from the police. Pushpa is given the same responsibilities as Jolly Reddy since he is deemed unfit for them. Jolly Reddy purposefully causes a delay in the export of wood, leaving Pushpa confused while Govindappa prepares to invade the location. Pushpa dumps all of the logs into a nearby river, Keshava pays off the head engineer of the adjacent dam to shut the gates, stopping the logs from flowing, and Govindappa makes no money from the second raid.
On this special day, Srinu throws a party. During the celebration, Pushpa overhears two people discussing Srinu's scams and learns that he sells wood for considerably more than what his customers are willing to pay. He tells Konda Reddy about it and advises him to demand a fair portion from Srinu, but he gives up when he realises it would be risky to oppose the powerful Srinu.
In the meantime, Pushpa develops feelings for Srivalli, a courageous and outspoken milk vendor who is the daughter of coolie Muniratnam, a smuggler like Pushpa. Eventually, an engagement is set up for the two of them. Because Pushpa was born out of wedlock to his father and mother Parvatamma, who are not officially married, Pushpa's elder half-brother Mohan causes a commotion during the ceremony and accuses him of using their father's name to fix his marriage with Srivalli. Parvatamma is hurt during the altercation, and Pushpa is inspired to become a powerful figure by her suffering.
He smuggles the wood directly to Chennai, bypassing Srinu, and later meets with him, asking a larger price than what is paid, but when he is rejected and ordered to be thrashed, Pushpa revolts, goes to Chennai and strikes a contract with the customer Murugan for 1.5 crores per tonne, which Konda Reddy and Pushpa agree to split equally. While smuggling the wood, Govindappa detains Muniratnam and accuses him of being a mole. When Jolly Reddy, who has feelings for Srivalli, finds out about Muniratnam's trick, he holds her father imprisoned and blackmails her into having sex with him in payment for his release.
When Pushpa is at his best, the district's SP is appointed by the egotistical Bhanwar Singh Shekawat. Pushpa offers Bhanwar a payment in exchange for his cooperation, but Bhanwar mocks Pushpa for the tale of his parents in an effort to get Pushpa to address him as sir. Pushpa turns timid and submissive towards Bhanwar, who frequently accepts bribes from him, after this occurrence. On his wedding day, Pushpa spends time partying with Bhanwar by himself and talks about the previous event and Bhanwar's demeaning behaviour.
In order to demonstrate that he is the same without clothes. In contrast, Bhanwar is nothing without his uniform and even his pet dog would not be able to identify him, Pushpa takes Bhanwar's gun and forces him to be partially nude. While a furious Bhanwar travels home in a half-naked state and his dog is unable to recognize him because he is not wearing a uniform, Pushpa returns to the wedding venue. Furious, Bhanwar kills the dog and sets a Pushpa bribe afire while pledging vengeance. While Pushpa weds Srivalli, informing her that the actual story has begun.
Pushpa: The Rise was released on December 17, 2021. The movie was formerly scheduled to hit theatres on August 13, 2021, over the Independence Day holiday. The movie's release date was postponed to Christmas 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. The producers revealed the release date as December 17, 2021, in October 2021. Telugu and dubbed releases in Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi were all made available simultaneously. In 2022, the movie was shown at the Moscow International Film Festival. In the category "Blockbuster hits from around the world," it was shown.
Bollywood Hungama rated it a grade of 3.5/5, stating that it was a Paisa Vasool movie and praising Sukumar's screenplay. The Indian Express rated it three stars out of five and commented "Allu Arjun walks away with the film with his strong performance. He embraces his deglamorized look and delivers a memorable performance ". Deccan Chronicle gave the movie three out of five stars and referred to the lead actor, Allu Arjun, as the "one-man show" in their review. The reviewer also said that the song Sami Sami appeared out of context in the latter part and lacked impact at the finale.

After Rangasthalam (2018) was a hit, Sukumar gave Mahesh Babu, with whom he had previously collaborated on 1: Nenokkadine, a script to read (2014). After finishing Vamshi Paidipally's project Maharshi, Babu, who approved of the project and appreciated the tale, was said to have begun shooting (2019). The producers intended to begin shooting during Dusshera in July 2019. (7 October 2019).
The movie's dubbing process started in April 2021. Shreyas Talpade announced that he had dubbed the Hindi version of the movie for Allu Arjun ten days prior to its release. Jis Joy, who voice-dubbed for Arjun's earlier Malayalam films, has been hired to voice-dubb Allu Arjun in the Malayalam version of the movie. Copyright Controversy- Author Vempalli Gangadhar accused Sukumar and the creators of violating their copyright. In a Facebook post from August 27, 2020, Gangadhar claimed that the plot of the red sandalwood smuggling story had been lifted verbatim from his short fiction Tamil Coolie, which was written for Sakshi newspaper and published two years earlier.
Lawsuit Controversy- A particular men's association filed a lawsuit in December 2021 against a song from the movie Oo Antava Mava Oo Oo Antava in an Andhra Pradesh court. They claimed that the song's lyrics appeared to mock the masculine gaze and characterized males as casanovas and eve teases. They also demanded that the song be forbidden.

According to Box Office India, the opening would have been greater if not for the Andhra Pradesh state's problem with ticket prices.
