As the Chola kingdom faces danger, Ponniyin Selvan continues to pursue the prince Arulmozhi Varman and his family (who would later become Rajaraja I). It was originally going to be a single film, but it ended up being split into two portions that were made simultaneously. Joint main photography for both parts began in December 2019, with two breaks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, wrapping up on September 16th, 2021. A. R. Rahman created the soundtrack, while Ravi Varman handled the photography, A. Sreekar Prasad handled the editing, and Thota Tharani handled the production design.
The movie was released on the 28th of April 2023. It has a runtime of 165 minutes. The movie was made with a budget of 500 Crores and earned a box office collection of 338 Crores. PS 2 can be enjoyed in the Tamil language and can be enjoyed on Amazon Prime.
The movie got a rating of 8.1/10 on IMDB.
While the fans of the book might be disappointed with some major deviations from the book, the ace director understands the form won't let him be entirely faithful to the novel, stated Kirubhakar Purushothaman of Indian Express, awarding the film 4.0 out of 5 stars.
Apart from the heartbreaking narrative, Haricharan Pudipeddi, a critic for Hindustan Times, noted, It's the exquisite that elevate PS 2 in terms of delivering a larger-than-life viewing experience.
The doomed relationship, according to M. Suganth of The Times of India, is what keeps the story's tension up till its finale and propels the characters to make choices that have broad repercussions. He gave the book 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Ponniyin Selvan's film rights were purchased by well-known actor MGR, also known as M G Ramachandran, in 1985. The renowned director, however, was unable to work on the movie before he started filming because of an accident. He was unable to work on the movie despite extending the rights for another four years, so he eventually put it on hold.
With the help of Lyca Productions, Mani Ratnam was able to complete his dream project in 2019. With a $500 crore budget, the movie first debuted as a standalone. It was divided into two pieces later.
The Animal Welfare Board of India sued Mani Ratnam on September 21 over the alleged death of a horse during the shooting of Ponniyin Selvan in Hyderabad. The group, however, made no comment in response to the claimed remark.

There are several actors in the ensemble cast, including Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, R. Sarathkumar, Jayaram Prabhu, Sobhita Dhulipala, Vikram Prabhu, Prakash Raj, Rahman, and R. Parthiban.
