Yuvraj Vijay Singh (Salman Khan), a prosperous crown prince of Pritampur, is about to become king. Rajkumari Maithili Devi (Sonam Kapoor), a princess from the royal house of the neighboring kingdom Devgarh, is the subject of his engagement. However, Vijay has a lot of problems with Maithili and his siblings because of his rigid, unyielding attitude. His wealthy half-sisters, Rajkumari Chandrika (Swara Bhasker) and Rajkumari Radhika (Aashika Bhatia) have filed a lawsuit against Vijay for a share in the royal property because they believe the Queen wronged their mother when she disgraced her in front of all of the King's children. Chandrika works as an accounts head in a municipal school and lives in a separate rented bungalow outside the royal palace. Additionally, Chandrika and Maithili, who were best friends in school, have lost contact as a result of her engagement to Vijay. Similar to him, Yuvraj Ajay Singh, his half-brother (Neil Nitin Mukesh), swears revenge and has been planning to assassinate him and claim the throne for himself. He enlists the aid of Vijay's secretary Sameera (Samaira Rao) and his manager Chirag Singh (Armaan Kohli), who is constantly leading Ajay astray and betraying him from behind. Vijay narrowly survives an Ajay and Chirag-planned assassination attempt on his life but sustains serious injuries. He is concealed in a room that is kept a secret by two doctors.
Prem Raghuvanshi, or Prem Dilwale (Salman Khan), a love guru and vivacious stage actor who falls in love with Princess Maithili, also known as Vijay's twin, arrives in Pritampur to meet her with his friend Kanhaiya (Deepak Dobriyal). Sanjay (Deepraj Rana), the Pritampur Palace's security chief, spots him by chance at a bus stop and brings him to Diwan Saheb (Anupam Kher). When Diwan noticed how much Prem and Yuvraj Vijay looked alike, he asked Prem to stand in for Yuvraj while he was in a coma. Prem poses as Yuvraj Vijay, but his affable, kind demeanor wins Maithili over. Maithili later falls in love with Prem without realizing it. Prem also makes an effort to patch things up with Vijay's sisters by inviting them back to the palace and drafting legal documents transferring all of the royal family's assets to them. With a little prodding from Maithili, his half-sisters eventually have a change of heart and decline to rob the prince of his money and make amends with him as their brother. They are so moved by this act of kindness.
When Yuvraj Ajay and Chirag learn that Prem is merely acting as the prince, they decide to kidnap the real Vijay. To set up Vijay against Ajay and Prem, Chirag resolves to double-cross Ajay while also freeing Vijay. Prem and Kanhaiya step in to stop the chaos as Vijay and Ajay start a sword battle. Chirag makes an attempt to shoot them down but fails and dies. As a result of Ajay's repentance, Vijay makes amends with him. After Prem has departed to go back to his family, Maithili is horrified to learn the truth about Prem not being Yuvraj Vijay and is devastated. Prem and Maithili are reunited when the royal family arrives at Prem's home, and they blissfully marry Kanhaiyya and Sameera as well.
Prem Ratan Dhan Payo is a traditional Bollywood family drama film starring Salman Khan and Sonam Kapoor and directed by Sooraj Barjatya. The movie is an homage to Barjatya's previous films, which were known for their traditional, ornate, and theatrical filmmaking.
Rich production values are the movie's greatest asset. Nothing short of extraordinary can be said about the sets, outfits, and cinematography. The film's grandeur is enhanced by the opulent locations and vibrant attire.
Himesh Reshammiya's music has a captivating melody that is perfectly matched to the drama. Songs like "Prem Ratan Dhan Payo" and "Jalte Diye" have beautiful melodies and eye-catching music videos.
Salman Khan, in a double role as Prem and Prince Vijay, delivers a charming and endearing performance as the kind-hearted common man and the stoic prince. Sonam Kapoor, in the role of Princess Maithili, compliments him well, bringing grace and elegance to her character. Their chemistry on screen is one of the film's highlights.
However, the film's main drawback lies in its predictable and formulaic storyline. It follows the age-old Bollywood trope of a commoner impersonating a royal and the ensuing complications. The narrative is excessively melodramatic, and some might find it hard to connect with the over-the-top emotions and twists in the plot.
Another criticism revolves around the film's portrayal of traditional Indian values, which some viewers found oversimplified and outdated. The characters and their actions often conform to conventional stereotypes, which may not resonate with a more modern and diverse audience.
With a runtime exceeding 3 hours, "Prem Ratan Dhan Payo" tests the patience of the audience, especially in the second half. Some scenes could have been trimmed without affecting the overall impact of the film.
In conclusion, "Prem Ratan Dhan Payo" is a film that harks back to the golden era of Bollywood filmmaking. It offers a dose of nostalgia for those who appreciate classic family dramas with opulent sets and elaborate song-and-dance sequences. While it may not break new ground in terms of storytelling, it caters to a specific audience looking for traditional Indian cinema with a touch of grandeur and emotion.
