Shiuli Iyer and Danish "Dan" Walia are both hotel interns. Shiuli, who is very disciplined and responsible at work, is the polar opposite of Dan, who is sloppy and careless at work. Dan is struggling with his job at the beginning of the story. Except for two of his friends who work as interns at the same hotel, he does not appear to have a good relationship with his coworkers.
Shiuli and her friends celebrate New Year's Eve on the third floor of the hotel. Shiuli slips and falls and is taken to the hospital. While other hotel employees visit Shiuli in the hospital, Dan is deeply moved when his friends tell him that Shiuli's last words before falling were "Where is Dan?"
Dan begins going to the hospital every day, despite the fact that it has a negative impact on both his profession and his relationships with his friends, who cover his shifts and support him financially. Dan is fired after a fight at the hotel. He finds peace in being with Shiuli, who is gradually improving, and Dan's simple presence calms Shiuli. He commits his entire time to caring for her.
Vidya, Shiuli's mother, sees Dan's career and personal life sinking due to his devotion to Shiuli and resolves to send him away to take care of himself. Dan takes a job as a manager at another hotel in Kullu, but he can't get his mind off Shiuli. He soon learns about Shiuli's failing health and pays a visit to the hospital. He apologises for suddenly abandoning her and offers to stay. Shiuli calms down and begins to improve after seeing Dan.
She is quickly released from the hospital and brought home, where Dan continues to care for her. He brings her to a park and questions why she recalled him prior to her accident. Shiuli attempts to say his name clearly in response. The following evening, Shiuli has a seizure and dies as a result of her organs collapsing. Dan, emotionally shattered, visits Shiuli's residence and consoles her family. He is then seen collecting her death certificate with tears in his eyes.
Vidya later informs Dan that she was named Shiuli after her love of the shiuli flower, which she used to collect as a child with her grandfather. She also mentions how shiuli flowers are short-lived, as they thrive all night and perish by dawn.
Dan gets rehired by the hotel some months later, where he completes his diploma and works as a sous chef. He goes to Vidya after noticing multiple missed calls. They're sitting in the backyard, talking about Shiuli. Vidya informs Dan about her family's relocation to Trichy, pointing to the shiuli plant in the backyard. She doesn't want to abandon Shiuli's plant, but Dan tells her that he would look after it.
Shiuli's family had relocated by the end of the story, and Dan carries the shiuli plant with him as a sign of the unconditional and uncommon love that had developed in his heart for Shiuli.

The main shoot began in September 2017 and ended in November 2017. The film was shot entirely in Dwarka, Delhi, with a few scenes in Connaught Place, New Delhi, and Defence Colony, South Delhi. Marathi filmmaker, Sarika Mene alleged that October copied the storyline and characters from her 2017 film Aarti: The Unknown Love Story. At Mumbai's Vile Parle Police Station, she had lodged a non-cognizable criminal case against the filmmakers of October. Hemal Trivedi, a Marathi filmmaker who was working with Mene on the Bollywood remake of Aarti, backed up her claim on Facebook.
The Rising Sun Films crew, however, denied the claims, stating "We have not heard of the film Aart' nor do we have full details of the matter as yet.... We will look into this and deal with it appropriately".
Mene stated that she will not give up easily and hired a new lawyer for the case because she had requested that the makers of October watch Aarti, to which they did not respond.
In a letter dated May 20, 2018, the ScreenWriters Association (SWA) cleared October of all accusations in a document issued to Rising Sun Films and Juhi Chaturvedi from the SWA Dispute Settlement Committee set up on May 5, 2018, based on the fact that both films may overlap, but the way they are treated is different.
October has grossed over ₹49.92 Crore (US$6.3 million) in India as of 10 May 2018, and as of 6 May 2018, ₹34.5 million (US$430,000) in North America (USA and Canada), 07.1 million (US$89,000) in the United Kingdom, 03.2 million (US$40,000) in Australia, and 01.1 million (US$14,000) in New Zealand, for a worldwide total of ₹545 million (US$6.8 million).
The film's performance was driven by its niche audience who appreciated the depth and emotional resonance of the narrative. The word spread about the film's poignant storytelling, and it attracted a loyal fanbase. Additionally, the lead actors, Varun Dhawan and Banita Sandhu, received praise for their realistic performances, which further contributed to the film's buzz. The movie made a total of ₹ 58.41 Crore at the box office.
