Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. is an Indian Hindi-language comedy drama film released in 2003 that was written and directed by Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Before Lage Raho Munna Bhai, this film was the first installment in the Munna Bhai film series. The film, which was released in India on September 19, 2003, features Sunil Dutt in his final film portrayal as the father of his real-life son, Sanjay Dutt, who portrays the title character Munna Bhai. Gracy Singh, Jimmy Sheirgill, Arshad Warsi, Rohini Hattangadi, and Boman Irani round out the cast. It is loosely inspired by the 1998 film Patch Adams. The film is set in Mumbai and follows Munna Bhai (Sanjay Dutt), a thug who attempts to please his father (Sunil Dutt) by posing as a doctor. When a physician, Asthana (Irani), reveals Munna's falsehoods and tarnishes his father's reputation, Munna enrolls in medical school. When Munna discovers that Asthana is the college's dean, he swears vengeance and falls in love with Suman, a house doctor, unaware that she is Asthana's daughter.

"Munna Bhai M.B.B.S." is a comedic film about Mumbai gangster Murli Prasad Sharma (Munna Bhai), who pretends to be a doctor to pacify his visiting parents. The lighthearted façade takes a serious turn when his father proposes a marriage between Munna and a doctor's daughter, who was his childhood friend. After Munna is exposed and his heartbroken parents return to their village, he gets himself admitted to a medical college, in a quest for redemption. Through unconventional means like his "Magical Hug", Munna soon becomes adored by all. However, he can't fool the sharp-eyed Dean (Dr. Asthana), who opposes Munna's unorthodox methods and uncovers his ruse. Despite not being able to graduate as a doctor, Munna continues to impact the lives of many. While he and his wife open a new hospital, the medical college eventually adopts his once-disregarded techniques.
The first film in the Munna Bhai film series, Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.,that released on December 19 in 2003, was a critical and commercial triumph, and was succeeded by Lage Raho Munna Bhai. It attained silver jubilee status (25-week run) at the box office, becoming one of only eight Hindi films to do so since the year 2000. In its 26th week of release, the film continued to be shown on 300 screens in India.
Munna Bhai MBBS has an imdb rating of 8.1 out of 10 and a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 94% based on reviews from critics and audiences. The 1998 film PATCH ADAMS served as a loose inspiration for MUNNABHAI M.B.B.S., which is primarily successful because of its clever screenplay, fantastic performances, and, most importantly, its high emotional quotient. Making people laugh is the most difficult undertaking, but MUNNABHAI M.B.B.S. guarantees plenty of smiles and laughter from scene A to Z. The narrative leads you on a journey that has rarely been depicted in Hindi films before. From a composition standpoint, MUNNABHAI M.B.B.S. has a number of highlights.

Murli Prasad Sharma, fondly referred to as "Munna Bhai", is not your quintessential protagonist. This charismatic character, hailing from the bustling streets of Mumbai, breaks away from traditional hero norms, making him one of the most memorable characters in the panorama of Indian cinema. Residing in the heart of Mumbai, Munna Bhai navigates the labyrinths of life with a distinctive street-savviness. His command over Bombay Hindi, resonating with the authentic vernacular culture of the city, further enhances his intriguing persona. He is a gangster, but he is not the menacing, fearful figure people often associate with gangsters. Rather, he is ubiquitous in the hearts of many through his unconventional charm and wit.
A significant part of Munna Bhai's life and journey is his faithful companion, Sarkeshwar, or as he is popularly known, "Circuit". Often spotted in the frame alongside Munna Bhai, Circuit is both a friend and a sidekick, perfectly complementing Munna Bhai's larger-than-life personality. Circuit's loyalty is unwavering; he functions as the right-hand man, offering support and companionship throughout various ordeals. His shared dialogues and camaraderie with Munna Bhai offer several comedic moments within the narrative, creating a delightful balance of humor and depth in their relationship.
Dr. Asthana is an accomplished and strict dean of a medical college. The character plays a significant role in the film, as he is the primary antagonist who opposes the unconventional methods of Munna Bhai, the film's protagonist.

During the scripting process, Hirani envisioned Anil Kapoor in the main role. Shah Rukh Khan was later cast as Munna alongside Sanjay Dutt as Zaheer, but due to back problems, he had no choice but to decline the role. However, the film's end credits acknowledge Khan's contributions to the script.
