The movie tells the tale of Altaaf, a little child whose life is greatly affected by the ongoing strife in Kashmir. Altaaf sees a terrible clash between militants and security personnel during which his entire family is brutally murdered. Later, a policeman by the name of Inayat Khan adopts him and raises him as his kid. Altaaf develops into a gifted and knowledgeable young man who is exceptional at music and painting as he gets older. But he harbors a fierce urge to exact revenge on those who brought about his family's awful demise. Altaaf's life changes when he falls in love with Sufiya, the police chief's daughter. The film gains an emotional dimension from its love story. The film explores themes of love, devotion, and the cycle of bloodshed while delving into the complexities of the Kashmir War. It draws attention to how political unrest affects people as individuals, as families, and as a community. In a suspenseful climax, Altaaf is forced to choose between his love for Sufiya and his loyalty to his father. In the end, the movie emphasizes the value of forgiving others and mending relationships while challenging the concepts of justice and retribution.
The film was shown at the Stockholm International Film Festival and was distributed theatrically in India and throughout the world on October 27, 2000, during the Diwali festival and was rated R in the United States due to violence. Mission Kashmir is also available on Amazon Prime.
The film has a Rotten Tomatoes audience score of 71% and an IMDb rating of 6.6 out of 10. According to India Today, Mission Kashmir, unlike the majority of previous Indian films about terrorism, has an aura of authenticity about it. The movie does not just have the good guys and bad guys lined up on either side. Pakistanis themselves are not the bad guys. This skillfully written movie has neither villains nor heroes.
Young Altaaf Khan sees his entire family brutally massacred while participating in a counter-insurgency operation in the Kashmir Valley. Inaayat Khan, a police officer who accidentally kills Altaaf's family while pursuing a gang of insurgents, is in charge of the operation. Altaaf, who is the sole survivor, suffers significant trauma as a result of the incident and develops a lifelong animosity toward Inayat. Inaayat adopts Altaaf and raises him as his own kid. Altaaf becomes involved in the ongoing strife in Kashmir as he gets older and joins the militant movement in an effort to exact revenge on Inaayat Khan and the system that destroyed his life.
Inaayat Khan is a committed and patriotic officer who advocates for maintaining the rule of law and removing the menace of terrorism in Kashmir. His life, however, takes a dramatic turn when, accidentally, he kills the family of a young boy named Altaaf Khan during one of these operations. Unaware of the ramifications of his actions, Inaayat adopts Altaaf and raises him as his own son. Inaayat Khan learns the truth about Altaaf's past and his family's unfortunate circumstances as the movie goes on. Knowing that his acts caused great agony and suffering to an innocent child makes him feel guilty and remorseful. Inayat sets out on a journey to put things right with Altaaf and atone for his past mistakes.
Sufiya is introduced as a journalist reporting on the situation in Kashmir. She is an idealistic and determined individual who strives to uncover the truth and shed light on the realities of the conflict-ridden region. Sufiya's paths cross with Altaaf, and she becomes intrigued by his story and his involvement in the struggle. As the film progresses, Sufiya develops a deep bond with Altaaf, sharing his pain and aspirations. She plays a crucial role in guiding Altaaf and helping him understand the importance of forgiveness and moving beyond revenge. Sufiya also becomes a source of support for Inaayat Khan, aiding him in his journey of redemption and reconciliation.
Hilal is a Pathan terrorist group leader who is determined to destroy India by inflaming the disputes in the region of Kashmir. Hilal encouraged Altaaf to exact revenge on Inaayat Khan for killing his family unlawfully while using Altaaf's hatred for his own ends. Hilal is a man who considers killing people and destroying lives in order to obtain his goals; he is even willing to give his own life in order to further his goals.

No one recognized Hrithik Roshan's face when he arrived on set to begin filming Mission Kashmir in late 1999 because his debut movie Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai hadn't yet been published due to the high level of security in Kashmir. Due to his fair complexion and light coloring, the security personnel on the location believed Hrithik was actually a Kashmiri terrorist when he showed up for the first day of shooting in Srinagar dressed as the Kashmiri militant he plays in the movie. As a result, they forbade him from entering the set.
The son of Kashmiri poet Dina Nath Nadim accused filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra of copyright infringement for allegedly stealing the music for his film, Mission Kashmir, from his father's work, 'Bumboor Yamborzal'.

Initially, Aishwarya Rai was approached to play the character of Sufiya in the movie.
Rajkumar Hirani, who is today regarded as a successful independent filmmaker, created the Mission Kashmir trailer and promotional materials.
The lead roles of Altaaf and Inayat were offered to Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan, respectively, but they were unable to accept them because of their commitments to Mohabbatein, which was released during the same Diwali weekend.
