The narrative takes place in Mumbai. Rahul, who is keen to advance in his contact centre job, lets persons connected to his boss, Ranjit, use his apartment in exchange for bringing their lovers and potential liaisons in exchange for a recommendation. He secretly adores Neha, a coworker who has quickly risen through the ranks because of her friendship with Ranjit.
Ranjit is dissatisfied with his marriage to Shikha (with whom he has an eight-year-old daughter), and has an affair with Neha. He doesn't have anywhere to take her, which is the main issue. He calls Rahul to his office after learning what Rahul does and threatens to disclose what Rahul does at his apartment if he doesn't lend it to him. Ranjit advances Rahul after he accepts. He is unaware that Neha is Ranjit's potential love interest in an affair.
Shikha, who meets her aunt frequently in her Bharatanatyam courses, reads a letter from the United States to her aunt. Through the letter, she discovers that her aunt Shivani once loved a man named Amol, but he dumped her to follow his aspirations in the US. Amol and Shivani, both in their seventies, are currently calculating their remaining days. Through the letter, Amol expresses his desire to meet Shivani and spend his final days with her as he is likely to visit India for the last time. Shivani concurs. Shruti, Shikha's sister, is twenty-seven years old, anxious to get married, and she meets numerous potential husbands. Monty is one of them, and Shruti thinks he's strange and old. Shruti is also Neha's roommate, and Neha frequently displays her guilty sentiments over initiating an affair with Ranjit in an indirect manner that Shruti can not comprehend.
Amol instructs Shivani to meet her at the train station, so Shikha goes with her aunt. Shivani notices Amol in the opposite platform while Shikha is busy purchasing magazines. He descends onto the tracks and crosses them to the opposite station to meet her instead of using the pedestrian route. Shikha is watching this and is pleased to see the scene. One day, Shikha runs upon divorced and failing theatre artist Akash at a bus stop. He and his buddies perform theatre on the mezzanine level above Shivani's Bharatanatyam classes. They begin as friends but gradually develop a closeness and travel together without any romantic overtones.
Shruti has a crush on a fellow employee in her office. When Shruti goes to her boss's house one day to express her affection, she is surprised to see him in bed with another man, proving that he is gay. Shruti instantly resigns from her position and joins a new business. She realizes Monty has a job there as well. Through his connections with his boss, Monty helps her land the position, and the two become friends. Monty also informs Shruti that his mother has found the perfect bride for him and requests her assistance in wedding preparations.
Amol and Shivani make an effort to free Shivani from the nursing home after rekindling their romance. However, the young man in charge of the nursing home taunts Amol and Shivani, breaking their hearts. When Neha questions Ranjit about their future during a subsequent visit to Rahul's home, the latter responds that they are merely doing it for fun and claims that Neha has used him to advance her career. Ranjit criticises Neha and claims that she hasn't just asked him for money after she responds by accusing him of using her. He then throws Neha to the ground. In an attempt to end her life, Neha drinks phenylalanine.
Rahul, who is unhappy, brings a prostitute home. He discovers Neha who has tried suicide when he goes to the bathroom to get a condom. He summons his medical neighbour, drives the prostitute out right away, and together they save Neha by inducing vomiting and getting her admitted to the hospital. Rahul phones Ranjit, who has already departed for Bangalore due to a pressing business matter, and asks him to look after Neha for a few days. Neha hasn't returned home, and Shruti notices this.
Amol pays Shivani a visit one evening, and Shivani invites him to stay the night with him. Shivani awakens in the morning with some discomfort, and Amol then makes an ambulance call. Shivani, who is about to pass away, declares that her dying wish is to pass away in Amol's arms. Amol is severely depressed and agitated. He brings up the subject of love with Shikha and Shruti and expresses regret for having left Shivani 40 years prior.
Shruti locates Neha in Rahul's home. Shruti misreads the situation and smacks Rahul after realizing that she had tried suicide, as Neha puzzledly looks on. Shruti realises that Ranjit was having an affair with Neha and not Rahul and that Ranjit was the cause as she is outside the apartment requesting a cab and sees Ranjit (who has returned) approaching and questioning her. In the meantime, Shikha pays Akash a visit to his house, where they become intimate. Shikha recognises her limits just before they become even more intimate and departs from Akash's house. She sobs when she returns home.
When Ranjit gets home and notices Shikha sobbing, he assumes Shruti has told him about his affair. Later, Ranjit comes clean. Shikha admits her friendship and closeness to Akash and claims that Shruti never told her anything. Enraged, Ranjit makes the decision to live with Neha. Shruti, who has fallen in love with Monty, is told their wedding date. Rahul plans to take a train out of Mumbai because he is dissatisfied with how the city has treated him.
Rahul decides to depart on the day of Monty's wedding, Ranjit decides to move in with Neha, and Akash sends Shikha her handbag, which she left at Akash's house. In a separate letter, he tells her that he is prepared to accept her as she is—a housewife or a contemporary girl. Additionally, he adds that she is required to travel with him since he has been offered a job in Dubai and is prepared to board a train for the airport.
Neha discovers she loves Rahul while travelling with Ranjit and begins pursuing his taxi to the train station. Just before Monty gets married, Shruti decides to tell him how she feels. Monty makes fun of him by asking, "What? You've come too late. The clothing' sizes won't fit you! She departs, furious. While realising his feelings for Shruti, Monty boards the wedding horse and pursues her taxi to the same train station. Shikha gets ready and travels to the train station.
Monty pursues Shruti, Neha pursues Rahul, and Shikha searches for Akash at the railway station. Rahul's bag falls open when Monty runs into him while looking for Shruti. Neha shows up and tenderly assists Rahul with packing his clothes into his luggage as he is doing so, giving the impression that Rahul won't be leaving Mumbai. Finally, Monty locates Shruti in a ladies compartment and walks inside. They embrace after realising they are in love and the women in the area applaud wildly. Shikha locates Akash but informs him that she won't be travelling with him, wishes him well with his new work in Dubai, and then departs.
The film concludes with Rahul and Neha eating dinner with a doctor and his wife from their neighbourhood, Shikha and Ranjit in a better marriage, Shruti and Monty, who have married, waiting at a traffic light with their three-year-old child, and Akash still wandering the streets of Mumbai. Amol recalls Shivani and is seen sitting on the same bench in the railway station where she sat when he first met her. He observes a young man crossing the lines in the station, just like Amol did, and reuniting with his sweetheart. Amol grinned at this and continued. The film concludes with a song by Pritam Chakraborty and an epilogical montage of the characters' lives.

Anmol- Amol, Shivani's former partner, abandoned her forty years ago so he could follow his aspirations in the US. He is currently in his 70s and is awaiting death. His dying wish is to spend his last days in India with Shivani. Shivani is keeping track of her remaining days.
Shivani- Shivani, Shikha and Shruti's aunt, receives a letter from the US towards the beginning of the movie, which Shikha reads aloud. It turns out that the letter is from her former boyfriend Amol, who left her for the US 40 years ago. In the letter, he expresses his intention to see Shivani one final time and states that he is likely travelling to India for the last time before passing away.
Shikha Ghosh Kapoor- The sister of Shruti, Shikha Ghosh Kapoor, frequently visits Shivani in her nursing home and Bharatanatyam courses. Her union with Ranjit is in disarray. One day, she meets Akash, a drama actor whose friends frequently perform plays in the structure housing Shivani's nursing home and whose plays Shivani frequently hears and enjoys. Shikha and Akash begin communicating as friends and then gradually develop a romantic relationship.
Ranjit Kapoor- Ranjit Kapoor, in his 30s, is wed to Shruti's sister Shikha Ghosh. Their daughter is 8 years old. He forbids Shikha from working since he feels he makes more than enough to pay for the house, leading to their miserable marriage. He began an illicit relationship with Neha for pleasure, not love, due to his unhappy marriage, but no one has known about it for the previous two years.
Akash Sharma- Akash Sharma is a struggling theatre artist who becomes close to Shikha. She hears him tell her that his wife left him because of his failure in business and that he intends to hunt for work in Dubai. They become close friends and begin going out to eat and see shows together, becoming attracted to one another.
Monty- In his late 30s, Monty is likewise eager to settle down. He runs into Shruti one day dressed as a potential groom. Despite Monty's great regard for Shruti, Shruti believes throughout their meeting that he is a complete flirt, and their meeting does not go well. Later, when Shruti breaks up with her boss, the two reconnect. They begin hanging out as friends and soon feel something for one another.
Shruti Ghosh- Shikha's sister Shruti, who also happens to be Neha's roommate, is 27 years old and anxious to be married. She meets a number of potential husbands, Monty being one of them. Shruti considers Monty to be quite odd and ancient. Shruti has a secret infatuation on her boss since he assists her in finding boyfriends.
Neha- Neha begins an illicit connection with Ranjit because she is keen to hick her position in her office. She and Ranjit frequently go to Rahul's residence after Ranjit threatens Rahul subtly by revealing what he does for recommendations if he doesn't rent him his apartment. Rahul concurs although he is unaware that Neha is Ranjit's girlfriend. As the sister of Ranjit's wife, Shikha, Neha feels a little bad about her affair and inadvertently expresses this to her roommate Shruti.
Rahul- Rahul is a young man who works in a call centre and aspires to advance quickly. He secretly adores Neha, a coworker who has advanced in the organisation as a result of her illicit relationship with their boss Ranjit. Rahul, keen to advance his position, lets people connected to Ranjit stay at his apartment in exchange for them bringing their girlfriends and/or partners for recommendations.
On March 14, 2007, the soundtrack was released. Pritam wrote the song's music, and Sayeed Quadri, Amitabh Verma, and Sandeep Srivastava wrote the lyrics. When Shruti and Rishi are at a vending machine and thinks Rishi is waving and conversing with her, Bob Dylan's "I Want You" is playing in the background. The soundtrack does not include the song. With around 11,00,000 units sold, this movie's soundtrack album ranked as the year's twelfth best-selling album on the Indian trade website Box Office India.
Pritam wrote the song Alvida in the 1990s, while he was still struggling. Pritam, Suhail Kaul, and Bangladeshi vocalist Fahruk Mahfuz Anam, also known as James, established the band Metro, which provided the music for the film. This Pritam-led rock group plays key scenes in the movie and moves the plot along. This is thought to be a first for Indian cinema. Rock music dominates Life In A... Metro's musical score. Pritam, Suhail Kaul, Soham Chakraborty, and James, a singer from Bangladesh, made up the group of four.
