Together with her next-door neighbour Jaswinder Jazz Kapoor, Jennifer operates a coffee shop that is not very popular. Her best pals are Rohit Patel, a fellow student, and Jaspreet Sweetu Kapoor, who is Jazz's sister. Naina has two best friends. Her life is monotonous and under the cloud of the death of her father until Aman Mathur and his mother move in next door with Pritam Chaddha, who is Aman's uncle.

The sunny disposition of Aman eventually endears him to Naina's family, and he begins to find solutions to the challenges they face. The movie Kal Ho Naa Ho is a classic because it manages to combine comedy, drama, and romance in such a way that it has a profound effect on its audience. This film, which was released in Bollywood in 2003 and was directed by Nikkhil Advani, is an emotional journey that examines the intricacies of life, love, and the importance of living in the present now.

The excellent performance that Shah Rukh Khan gives as the intriguing and captivating Aman Mathur is the driving force behind the entire movie. The charisma and complexity that Khan possesses bring Aman's persona to life, which in turn endears the audience to him. Preity Zinta shines in the role of Naina Catherine Kapur, showing her journey from a melancholy and reserved person to a powerful and self-reliant lady with complexity and realism. Saif Ali Khan gives a great performance as Rohit, Naina's best friend, and so provides a layer of comic relief. His portrayal of Rohit is a highlight of the film.

The plot of the movie deals with heavy topics like love, friendship, sacrificing for one another, and the precarious nature of life, and it is exquisitely written and directed. It takes the audience on an emotional rollercoaster, taking them from painful disclosures that pull at the heartstrings to joyful moments of hilarity and joy that make them laugh out loud. The movie's screenplay, which was written by Karan Johar, hits the ideal balance by deftly blending comedic and dramatic elements together.

The music that is used in the song Kal Ho Naa Ho is another component of the movie that stands out. Songs composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, which perfectly capture the spirit of the narrative and leave an indelible mark on the listener. Character Analysis

Shah Rukh Khan as Aman Mathur

Aman is presented to Naina Catherine Kapur (played by Preity Zinta) and her family in the role of being their new next-door neighbour. Everyone around Aman, including the audience, is instantly drawn in by his magnetic personality and infectious sense of humour the moment he steps foot in their lives. He has a contagious positive attitude that elevates the spirits of those who are around him and is almost always seen with a smile on his face.

One of the defining characteristics of Aman is his capacity to impart joy and happiness to other people, frequently prioritising the requirements of others and their well-being over his own. He has compassion for the anguish and challenges that Naina and her family are going through, and he makes it his mission to be their most consistent source of hope and encouragement throughout this time. In spite of the challenges she faces, Naina is inspired by Aman to take hold of life, rediscover hope, and value the simple pleasures in her existence.

On the surface, Aman gives off the impression of being easygoing and humorous. However, he is hiding a secret that has a significant impact on his behaviour. It is a well-kept secret that he is suffering from a life-threatening illness, and his upbeat demeanour acts as a screen to protect those around him from the anguish of what is to come. Aman's character is given a sense of depth as a result of this internal conflict, which arises from the fact that he is split between making the most of each day and coming to terms with the depressing reality of his condition.

Throughout the course of the movie, Aman's character displays an impressive mix of humour, generosity, and emotional depth all at once. He infuses the story with a sense of levity and cosiness, both of which contribute to the fact that the audience adores him as a character. The journey that Aman takes is both inspiring and heartbreaking; it has a long-lasting effect on the people he meets, teaching them the importance of love and encouraging them to experience life to the fullest.

Preity Zinta as Naina Catherine Kapur

The character of Naina Catherine Kapur, who is portrayed by Preity Zinta in the film Kal Ho Naa Ho, is one that is intricate and multi-dimensional. At the beginning of the movie, Naina is a shy and pessimistic young woman who is burdened by the financial troubles of her family and emotionally guarded due to experiences in the past.

However, everything changes for her after she meets Aman Mathur, who is portrayed by Shah Rukh Khan in the film. Naina's perspective on the world is shaken up by Aman's contagious optimism and charming demeanour. She gradually learns to let down her guard, allowing herself to experience delight while still facing her worries head on. Naina's journey of emotional development ultimately takes her to the discovery of her actual self, where she is free to pursue her aspirations and express her feelings.

Her genuine concern for her family and friends is evidence of Naina's naturally compassionate and loving personality, which is evident in all of the interactions in which she is involved. Both her relationship with Rohit, who is portrayed by Saif Ali Khan, and her relationship with her mother, who is portrayed by Jaya Bachchan, serve as examples of her compassion.

Naina has shown tremendous resiliency and strength despite the fact that she has had to overcome a variety of obstacles and emotional setbacks. She acquires the skills necessary to cope with challenging conditions and emerges as a more resilient person as a result.

Saif Ali Khan as Rohit

In the Bollywood movie Kal Ho Naa Ho, the character Rohit, who is portrayed by Saif Ali Khan, is an outgoing and pleasant protagonist who plays an important part in the plot. People are drawn to Rohit because he has an outgoing and upbeat personality, which he displays right from the start of his presentation. Because he exudes friendliness and is easy to approach, it is not hard to find common ground with him.

The constant dedication and dependability of Rohit is one of the distinguishing characteristics that he possesses. He is the kind of friend who sticks by your side no matter what and is always willing to offer assistance to those in need. The dedication that Rohit has to the people in his life is clear to see, as seen by the fact that he is always there for his pals when things become bad or stays by their side no matter what.

Naina, who serves as the film's protagonist, can rely on him to keep her secrets because of his helpful character and his readiness to put the needs of others ahead of his own needs. Even though Rohit has his fair share of problems, he never stops being a rock of resilience and a pillar of support for the people in his life who are important to him.

His character offers a feeling of consistency and familiarity to the plot, which adds another layer of complexity to the love triangle. In the end, Rohit's endearing qualities such as his devotion, dependability, and charisma make him a much-loved character in Kal Ho Naa Ho.

Behind the scenes

After they openly expressed their displeasure with his choice to hire other music directors for Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Johar cut ties with the composing team Jatin-Lalit. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Johar worked together for the first time to create the music and lyrics for Kal Ho Naa Ho.

New York City intrigued Johar and Advani, who planned to film Kal Ho Naa Ho there. In order to research the people, their culture, how they commute, and the way of life of both Americans and non-resident Indians (NRIs),  Johar travelled to New York City while working on the film's script. He stayed there for at least one and a half months. He sat in Central Park, looked at people, wrote the script, went back to Mumbai, told everyone about it, and picked the cast.

Contrary to many earlier Bollywood productions, Johar adhered with copyright regulations and was granted approval to modify Roy Orbison's 1964 song Oh, Pretty Woman for the movie; the new version was titled Pretty Woman.

The parts of Rohit and Naina were initially given to Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor. Salman Khan turned down the opportunity because he didn't want to play second fiddle, while Kapoor turned down the part because of a pay disagreement with Johar. Later, Preity Zinta and Saif Ali Khan agreed to take part in the venture.

Controversy

In his Autobiography - An Unsuitable Boy, Karan Johar had stated that during the casting of Kal Ho Naa Ho, there was a spat between him and Kareena Kapoor which led to silence between them for almost 9 months. Kareena’s movie Mujhse Dosti Karoge was a flop film which she blamed the director for and said that Karan’s assistant was not to be trusted either. On top of that, she demanded as much money as Shah Rukh Khan was supposed to get paid. All of these led Karan to select Preity Zinta instead.

Box Office Collection

Due in large part to the fact that it was set in New York City, the movie did quite well at the box office, particularly in foreign countries. The film Kal Ho Naa was shown in 400 theatres across the country of India. It was the most successful Indian film released in 2003, according to estimates provided by Box Office India, which placed the film's total collections at 860.9 million rupees.
