The Marathi film June 2021 stars Neha Pendse and Siddharth Menon in a story about mending broken hearts. The screenplay for the movie was written by Nikhil Mahajan, and it was directed for the first time by Vaibhav Khisti and Suhrud Godbole. The film addresses a variety of contemporary social concerns, such as cyberbullying, sexism, suicide, and the generational divide. June is a beautiful story about two troubled people who help each other get better. It is based on the writer and producer Nikhil Mahajan's own childhood and the lives of people he knows.
Due to limited funds, the main filming for June was done in just 18 days in October 2019. Many of the main actors, like Menon and Pendse, did not charge for their work and gave money to help make the movie. The movie was going to come out in June of 2020. But because of the COVID-19 epidemic, the movie did not come out. It was shown at many festivals, such as the Pune Film Festival, the International Film Festival of Kerala, the New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF), and the 51st International Film Festival of India. At the NYIFF, both the movie and Menon were up for Best Film and Best Actor. Menon won the award for Best Actor. June was then shown to the public and became the first movie on Planet Marathi, a new OTT platform.

Neel, an engineering student who failed his exams, took a break and returned to Aurangabad, where his disappointed parents live. He only mentions his break to avoid embarrassment. His father-son relationship is tense.
Neha needs space from Abhijit because of marital issues. She stays in Neel's housing society in Aurangabad at Abhijit's childhood home. She and Neel initially clash. Her smoking and drinking habits also alienate society. Neel and Neha bond over time. Neel takes Neha on city tours that Neha finds amusing but Neel finds boring Mughal-era monuments.
They talk about their past. Neel's hostel roommate was ambitious but unsophisticated, so other students bullied him. He wanted to score well and impress his parents. Neel, who studied in Marathi, promises to help him. He hangs himself from the ceiling fan after being bullied, and Neel blames himself. Neel's girlfriend Nicky doesn't know. Since Neel is from a different caste and her parents would disapprove, she is unsure if they will marry. Nicky thinks she did wrong and is disgusted by her body hair. Shaving her legs cuts her deeply. Neha is disgusted that Neel rejected his girlfriend over a minor issue and that Nicky injured herself.
Neel kisses Neha but she stops him. She describes her struggles to conceive with Abhijit. Smoking and drinking caused her miscarriage. She blames herself but Abhijit supports. The next day, Abhijit returns Neha and they start over. Neel forgives Nicky and studies harder. Neha leaves with Abhijit in June, ending summer with monsoon rains.
On IMDB, June received a rating of 7.2 out of 10. June begins with a quote from Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami, setting the tone for the film's protagonists, Neha and Neel. The film begins with Neha packing for Aurangabad, her husband Abhijit's hometown. She briefly meets Neel (Siddharth Menon) in the city to ask for directions to Abhijit's house. After failing engineering exams, Neel returns to Aurangabad for a year. He lives with his parents and is constantly lectured about how he embarrassed them by attending a Pune college. These talks and the pressure of not meeting their expectations cause his internal turmoil. Neel contemplates self-harm. He re-meets Neha and they bond.
Neha, like Neel, has struggled and considered suicide. She can't accept a two-year-old event that shattered her life. Two broken souls embark on a healing journey.
Suhrud Godbole and Vaibhav Khisti's debut directorial is a thoughtful and powerful look at love, loss, acceptance, bullying, morality, respect, friendship, and the importance of speaking your mind. June is a good movie with good storytelling, especially at a time when mental health is more important than ever. Nikhil Mahajan's story, partly inspired by his time in Aurangabad and his family's experiences, is intriguing. The director duo's sensible adaptation of this sensible story is a relief. Add beautiful cinematography (Quais Waseeq), spot-on editing (Mahajan and Hrishikesh Petwe), and effective sound (Baylon Fonseca, Vikrant Pawar, and Seby Varghese), and you have a film that screams teamwork.
The film's casting (Rohan Mapuskar) is another plus. Every actor, regardless of screen time, is perfect. Kiran Karmarkar as Neel's father is caught between his worries and trying to understand his son, Nilesh Divekar as Jaiswal, the housing society's self-appointed moral police who doesn't understand morality, Saurabh Pachauri, and Sanskruti Balgude, who always help their friends, everyone plays their roles honestly. Watch out for Resham Shrivardhan as Nicky, Neel's girlfriend.
Neha and Siddharth own the film. Neha amazes. She easily plays Neha's inner turmoil, despite her glam roles. Siddharth shines in this film. Siddharth's portrayal of confused and conflicted Neel is natural and nuanced. His performance is natural and his best on film.
Everyone handles life differently. We forget that we can't (and shouldn't) solve every problem alone. You need a friend, family, companion, or stranger to open your heart to. Sharing, listening, and understanding ease grief. June stresses that. Healing, new beginnings, self-acceptance, and growth are its themes.
