Shekhar Malhotra (Aamir Khan), the movie's main character, is a wealthy adolescent who attends the esteemed Rajput College. He is initially shown as a young man who doesn't take his academics seriously and is irresponsible and carefree. However, his transformation into a responsible and hardworking person after a tragedy forms the crux of the movie.
Anjali (Ayesha Jhulka): Anjali is Shekhar's love interest and a gifted athlete. She is a young woman who dreams of taking home the inter-college title and is self-assured and focused. Her persona effectively conveys the value of gender equality and women's empowerment.
Ratan (Deepak Tijori): Ratan is a prosperous businessman and Shekhar's brother. He is portrayed as the ideal son who obediently carries out his father's instructions and has a tense bond with Shekhar. He also exhibits a softer side, which is made apparent at the film's conclusion.
Sanjay Lal (Mamik Singh), the leader of the opposing college's cycling team, is portrayed as being pompous and haughty. However, as the film goes on, it becomes clear that his character is more nuanced, and he ultimately ends up supporting Shekhar.
Devika (Pooja Bedi) is a wealthy, spoiled brat who is crazy about Shekhar. Her persona serves to illustrate both the pervasive class divide in Indian society and the corrupting power of riches.

The part of Sanjay, which ultimately went to Mamik Singh, was originally offered to Aamir Khan, who played the major role in the film. However, Aamir Khan thought that Shekhar was a better fit for him as a person and asked to play that part instead.
The famous song "Pehla Nasha" was filmed over the course of five days in the South Indian hill town of Ooty. The place was picked because it offered a beautiful backdrop for the sappy song.
The climax of the movie, which features a high-speed bicycle race, was shot in Agra, in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
