Iraivan is a psychological crime drama revolving around a Killer called ‘Bamma’, who has murdered 12 girls in a gruesome manner and is under the observation of a psychologist.
Jayam Ravi, a police officer who is catched up in a difficult situation while trying to solve a murder investigation. He wants to serve justice to the victims at any cost.
In the trailer, we can see some wicked and disturbing glimpses by Rahul Bose. Jayam Ravi and Nayanthara are seen sharing a romantic situation.
The movie has been released on 28th September 2023.
'Iraivan' takes on the well-trodden theme of serial killers, falling into the trap of traditional filmmaking stereotypes in this genre and unfortunately missing out on delivering a unique or fresh approach to its narrative. Despite the film's attempts of graphical violence and portrayals of psychopathy as romanticized figures, it ends up being an unsympathetic exposition of brutality that distorts the real essence of a crime thriller.
Story and Direction
The film’s centerpiece revolves around two ACPs, Arjun played by Jayam Ravi and Andrew played by Narain, chasing a ruthless serial killer, Brahma (Rahul Bose). Although the investigation narrative hooks the viewer initially, it fails to maintain the intrigue due to its repetitive, gruesome scenes and an overused storyline. The director hasn't handled the sensitivity associated with such heinous crimes in a manner that would resonate empathetically with the audience.
Acting
Jayam Ravi’s inability to lend depth to his character results in a stereotypical, one-dimensional law enforcement officer. Despite her talent, Nayanthara struggles to make a mark due to limited screen time and underdeveloped characterization. Rahul Bose delivers an overdone performance, while Vinoth Kishan, despite efforts, is bound by the confines of a poorly constructed character. Sadly, the rest of the cast fails to distinguish themselves in this uninspired production.
Animation, Graphics, and Editing
The film tries to distinguish itself through graphic violence and marked depictions of murders, but these elements end up as an insensitive display of gore rather than contributing to the plot or the suspense. Manikanda Balaji’s editing skills brought some cohesion to the various disjointed elements of the plot.
Music and Cinematography
One of the film's saving graces is Yuvan Shankar Raja’s background score, which adds an emotional layer to the narrative moments and prevents the movie from becoming a complete monthly grind. Furthermore, Hari K Vedantam's cinematography, with striking color palettes in certain sequences, lends a visual appeal to the film.
Speed of the Movie
The pace of the movie is inconsistent, with certain sequences dragging on unnecessarily, while crucial plot points are hurried or not given enough screen time. It results in a lack of emotional connection with the characters or the narrative.
In conclusion, 'Iraivan' falls short on its promise as a gripping crime thriller and might appeal to an audience that seeks some suspense with graphic content, brushed with action elements. However, it’s a miss for audiences looking for meaningful narratives, psychological investigation, or well-rounded character development.
Name | Rating | Description |
---|---|---|
Logesh Balachandran | 2.5/5 | Lackluster narrative due to the director's choice to personalize all losses to the protagonist |
P Sangeetha (OTTPlay) | 2/5 | Tiresome violence and gore, weak screenplay resulting in many plot holes and a lacking thriller |
Jayam Ravi's character ACP Arjun is at the forefront of the investigation into the serial killings. After the traumatic event of his colleague Andrew's death, Arjun steps back from his duty. Despite resigning, the horrific images of victims continue to haunt him, causing his PTSD to intensify over time. The character Arjun is seen as cold-heartedly determined at surface level but empathetic at heart. However, Jayam Ravi's portrayal lacks depth, giving a one-dimensional feel to his character. Arjun's paranoia, primarily related to his fear for his fiancée Priya, keeps him involved in his hunt for the killer.
In contrast, Nayanthara's character Priya seems largely underused. Even though she is the protagonist’s romantic interest, she doesn't have much to do within the plot. Her character lacks proper development, and due to limited screen time, her impact on the narrative remains insignificant.
Rahul Bose's Brahma is introduced as the film's villain, a ruthless psychopath and serial killer who takes joy in orchestrating gruesome murders. Despite the makers’ intentions, the character Brahma could be perceived as romanticized given the sheer lack of background or human aspects attached to his portrayal, rendering him as a one-dimensionally evil figure. Bose’s performance may come across exaggerated, fitting a stereotypically overstated villain role more than delivering a nuanced portrayal of a complex antagonist.
Andrew, played by Narain, is the other ACP working closely with Arjun in the investigation. His character tragically dies in the line of duty while trying to capture the serial killer. Though not developed in depth, his character serves as a catalyst in the narrative, prompting Arjun to resign from his duty and later influencing Arjun's motivation to continue the pursuit.
In summary, "Iraivan" seems to struggle with delivering well-rounded characters and fails to break away from traditional stereotypes and cliches regarding the portrayal of serial killers and law enforcement officers in crime thrillers.
