Introduction

Housefull 4 is a 2019 Indian Hindi-language fantasy action comedy film directed by Farhad Samji and produced by Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment and Fox Star Studios. The film is the fourth installment of the Housefull franchise, and it stars Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, Bobby Deol, Kriti Sanon, Pooja Hegde, and Kriti Kharbanda in the lead parts. The plot revolves around reincarnation, with three siblings marrying three sisters. However, one of the brothers learns from a glimpse into the distant past that their brides have been mixed up in their present incarnation.

Sajid Khan, who had also directed the first two parts of the movie, was in charge of the first half of the project; however, due to Me To allegations, he was replaced halfway through filming by Farhad Samji. Nadiadwala stated that the film was the most expensive Indian comedy ever made.

The film was released theatrically in India on October 25, 2019, during Diwali, and garnered mixed to negative reviews. The film was a huge commercial triumph, grossing nearly 300 crores globally.  It went on to become the fourth highest-grossing Indian picture of all time and the fourth highest-grossing film of 2019.

Plot

Housefull 4 is a Bollywood comedy film that was released in 2019. Housefull 4 follows the story of three couples - Harry and Kriti, Roy and Pooja, and Max and Neha - who are reincarnated in different eras. In their past lives, they were Rajkumar Bala Dev Singh, Bangdu Maharaj, and Dharamputra, respectively, and were involved in a love triangle with Princess Madhu, who was reincarnated as Kriti.

As they struggle to unravel the mysteries of their past lives, the couples find themselves caught in a web of lies, deceit, and misunderstandings. They must navigate their way through the challenges posed by their eccentric families, who are more interested in their own agendas than the happiness of the couples.

With the help of their loyal friends and a wise old sage, the couples must learn to overcome their differences and come together to break the curse of their past lives. The film features a mix of humour, drama, and romance, and culminates in a grand finale that ties up all the loose ends and leaves the audience entertained.

Play

The film is not very entertaining and has average qualities, according to Komal Nahta of Film Information. On the one hand, there is the festival time, which will work in its favour, and on the other, word of mouth, which will work against it. The Times of India's Sreeparna Sengupta gave the movie two and a half stars out of five, noting that there were sequences of low-brow humour and mindless comic moments in the movie because of the overall silliness. She thought it was boring in parts and the gags were old. She stated, 

Overall, Housefull 4 is a total shambles. Which, if you like the Housefull style of comedy, might be appealing to you. However, if you are not, continue with caution. Taran Adarsh, a trade analyst and critic, gave the film one and a half stars out of five and labelled it disappointing. He criticised the writing, direction, and over-the-top performances, claiming that it is the weakest picture in the Housefull series, failing to make the audience laugh.

Character Analysis 

1. Harry: Played by Akshay Kumar, Harry is one of the three male leads in the movie. He is charming, confident, and has a good sense of humour. He is also shown to be a flirt but genuinely cares for Kriti's character. He is loyal to his friends and always tries to do the right thing. Harry is a likeable character who brings much energy to the movie.

2. Kriti: Played by Kriti Sanon, Kriti is one of the three female leads in the movie. She is intelligent, independent, and confident. She is shown to be a bit sceptical of Harry's advances at first but eventually falls for him. Kriti is also shown to be brave and resourceful, especially when she finds herself in danger. Overall, Kriti is a strong female character who is not afraid to speak her mind.

3. Max: Played by Bobby Deol, Max is one of the three male leads in the movie. He is portrayed as a playboy but has a good heart. He is shown to be loyal to his friends and genuinely cares for Neha's character. Max is also shown to be a hothead and is quick to get into fights. Overall, Max is a fun character who adds a lot of humour to the movie.

4. Pooja: Played by Pooja Hegde, Pooja is one of the three female leads in the movie. She is portrayed as a ditz but is kind-hearted and caring. Pooja is shown to be a bit clumsy and often gets into comical situations. Despite this, she is a loyal friend and genuinely cares for Roy's character. Overall, Pooja is a lovable character who adds a lot of comic relief to the movie.

5. Bangdu Maharaj: Played by Riteish Deshmukh, Bangdu Maharaj is a reincarnated character from the past. He is portrayed as a brave warrior who is also a bit of a goofball. Bangdu Maharaj is loyal to his friends and is always ready to fight for what is right. Overall, Bangdu Maharaj is a fun character who adds a lot of humour to the movie.

6. Rajkumar Bala Dev Singh: Played by Akshay Kumar, Rajkumar Bala Dev Singh is another reincarnated character from the past. He is portrayed as a brave and noble prince, a ladies' man. Rajkumar Bala Dev Singh is shown to be loyal to his friends and is always ready to fight for what is right. Overall, Rajkumar Bala Dev Singh is a likeable character who adds a lot of energy to the movie.

Behind the Scenes

The Rajasthan locations for Housefull 4 included the Jaisalmer Palace and the Ranthambore Forest. In the city of Jaisalmer, Akshay Kumar, Kriti Sanon, and the rest of the Housefull 4 cast filmed a periodic scene for the film.

Ek Chumma is a popular song in the film, which was shot in different locations throughout London. These include the London Tower Bridge, which features in the song's opening scene. The dance sequence in this tune, in which the female actors dance on top of tables, was shot in London's East India Docks. Finsbury Square Garden, Myddleton Square Garden, and Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, England are also mentioned in the tune.

The first day local box office collection for Housefull 4 was Rs. 16.50 crore. The picture grossed 17.00 crore on its second day. The film earned 13.00 crore on the third day, bringing the total opening weekend collection to 46.50 crore. The film has a global gross collection of 296 crore as of 5 December 2019, with a gross of 245 crore in India and 51 crore abroad, making it the seventh highest-grossing Hindi film of 2019.

Songs 

Sohail Sen, Farhad Samji, and Sandeep Shirodkar composed the film's soundtrack, and Farhad Samji, Sameer Anjaan, and Vayu wrote the lyrics. The song 'Bhoot Raja Bahar Aaja' from the 1977 film Chacha Bhatija, composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal and performed by Asha Bhosle, was recreated as 'The Bhoot Song.' The song's music was also remixed from Devi Sri Prasad's single 'Ammadu let's do Kummudu' from the film Khaidi No. 150. Tony Montana's Bala Bala Shaitan Ka Saala was made from the music. After six months, the film's producers received formal permission to remake the original song.

Interesting Fact

• Jacqueline Fernandes appeared in all four Housefull features. She does not appear in the fourth instalment of the comedic film.

• A female background performer reported being molested. When Akshay Kumar learned of the incident, he stood beside her and requested her to go to the police station.

• After Sajid Khan and Nana Patekar were charged with sexual harassment, Akshay Kumar halted production on this project. 

• Sajid Nadiadwala intended to cast every actor who had previously featured in his films. Housefull 4 is the only Housefull film that does not star Boman Irani.

• Bobby Deol's role was inspired by his father Dharmendra's character in the 1977 film Dharam Veer.

• This is Kriti Sanon's second picture, following Raabta, which was released in 2017. Both films are about reincarnation.

• This is Johnny Lever's first picture, which also stars his daughter Jamie Lever. They did not, however, appear in any sequences together.

• After acting together on Thank You in 2011, Akshay Kumar and Bobby Deol reunited in this comedy.
