Manik Kumar Tripathi is a wealthy business tycoon from Delhi, and Veera Tripathi is his daughter. One day before her wedding, she and Vinay, her fiancé whom she does not love, go on a drive. While Vinay is sitting in the car shaking in panic, she is kidnapped from a petrol station off of a highway. When the kidnappers learn that her father has connections in the government, they begin to lose calm. Mahabir Bhati, one of the kidnappers, is prepared to go to any lengths to do this, though.
Veera is frequently moved to several cities by the guys so they may escape being found by the authorities. When the authorities eventually violently search the truck, Veera eventually hides, surprising even herself. She comes to the conclusion that she enjoys the voyage and does not wish to return to her previous life and family. Veera discovers serenity and a fresh sense of independence as the days pass, which baffles and irritates Mahabir. Veera grows used to her captors to the point that she confides in Mahabir about the traumas of her upbringing, including the sexual assault she endured at the hands of her own uncle when she was just nine years old. She sees the kidnapping as a blessing in disguise since it gives her the chance to live and discover herself. She slowly pulls together Mahabir's narrative. When he was a little boy, his father beat both his mother whom the wealthy landowners employed as a sex slave and him. Mahabir ran away and disappeared forever.
Mahabir's fury steadily subsides as he learns to care about Veera and gradually drops his guard. In one of the little mountain villages they stop at, he tries to abandon her at a police station. Veera, however, declines and is adamant on sticking with Mahabir. He begins to fall in love with her as they travel together. Veera recalls that one of her many illogical ambitions was to always own a tiny cottage in the mountains when they were staying in a hilltop residence. Mahabir experiences emotion when he observes Veera taking care of him and making him feel like his mother. That night, each sleeps well, free from the memories of their own tragic pasts. However, the police show up the very next morning, and during the commotion, they shoot Mahabir, to which Veera has an intensely emotional reaction. Later it is discovered that Mahabir was put to death there and then.
She is eventually taken back to her parents' home, where she is reunited with her family, including her fiancé, and is able to heal from the extremely taxing ordeal. She confronts her uncle, who assaulted her as a youngster, in front of her family after she has finally recovered physically. She screams and sobs as she demands to know why her father only forewarned her about risks posed by strangers while the actual danger came from insiders—the people she had grown up with and been surrounded by. She moves out of the house and sets a shop in the mountains, where she also buys a home and raises a family. Veera gazes at the mountains and then the sky as the movie comes to a close, thinking of Mahabir. When she closes her eyes, she can imagine herself at the age of nine playing blissfully on a hillside. A little Mahabir joins her. She accepts the guy she loves and their shared childhood forms as she observes them playing.
The movie's initial release date was set for 12 December 2013, however it was postponed to 21 February 2014. The movie's trailer debuted on December 16, 2013. Pooja Bhatt, Mahesh Bhatt, Imtiaz Ali, Shazahn Padamsee, Mukesh Bhatt, Bhushan Kumar, and Rekha all attended a special screening of the movie on February 20, 2014, the day before it was released, at the PVR Cinemas in Mumbai. Critics were also invited to the film screening in addition to the guest invitees.
Without a doubt, Highway is a masterwork that appeals to viewers on many different levels. The film is taken to a new level by Imtiaz Ali's directing and the standout work of Alia Bhatt and Randeep Hooda. The film examines the profound, unadulterated bond between souls and how it might result in release and the discovery of a new purpose for living. The skillfully rendered childhood events of Veera and Mahabir mould their scarred characters, and it is via their journey together that they discover comfort and healing. Their altruistic friendship is tenderly shown in the movie without the use of a lot of words, instead focusing on powerful visual storytelling.
The music has great lyrics and flows naturally with the plot, giving it more emotional depth. Outstanding performances by Alia Bhatt and Randeep Hooda stay with the audience long after the credits have rolled. The directing of Imtiaz Ali deserves respect for creating a powerful experience on both a visual and emotional level. The film's unusual style sets it different from mainstream Bollywood film and provides a welcome diversion from traditional plots. The film's elaborately woven story captures and enchants the audience with its blend of love, freedom, and adventure.
The audience is greatly touched by the finale, which is both mesmerising and heartbreaking. As always, Rahman's music provides a superb accompaniment that enhances each moment in the film. The movie Highway is a heartwarming masterpiece that is a must-see for moviegoers. Its genius is demonstrated by the fact that audiences continue to connect with it years after it was first released. Highway is a cinematic gem that continues to have an immeasurable impact because of its enthralling performances and heartfelt writing.
Veera Tripathi plays the lead role in Highway. At first, she seems like any other privileged young woman getting ready for her wedding in this film. As the plot progresses, though, we learn that her wealthy upbringing hides a tormented interior life. Childhood trauma, including her parents' emotional neglect and abuse, shaped Veera's personality. She is emotionally damaged from her mother's fixation on social appearances and her father's indifference, and she desperately wants to be loved and accepted. Veera has a personal evolution throughout the course of the road trip. At first, she is terrified and distraught after being taken by Mahabir and his gang. But as they spend more time together, Veera discovers release and freedom despite her confinement. Outside of her formerly confining environment, she gains a new appreciation for the purity and nakedness of life.
Randeep Hooda brings a lot of depth and complexity to his portrayal of Mahabir Bhati. During a heist, he is in charge of a gang that kidnaps Veera. Mahabir is a tough and emotionally distant person because of his humble origins and difficult upbringing. He carries the anguish and rage of a troubled past with him. We see Mahabir's personality develop together with him on the road trip. Despite his cold and harsh demeanour at first, he learns to relax with Veera. As she demonstrates empathy and care for him, he begins to trust her more and more. The friendship that develops between Veera and Mahabir helps to mend both of their broken hearts. Being with Veera calms Mahabir down and helps him become more empathetic and understanding.
