Plot

'Govinda Naam Mera' is an intriguing tale of lovers, family disputes, and twisted plots, directed by Shashank Khaitan.

The plot centers around Vicky Kaushal who's a backup Bollywood dancer Govind 'Govinda' also said Govya/Gotya/Gondya in the film. His dream is to become a choreographer, but he's concurrently managing personal and professional struggles. Govinda finds himself in a problematic marriage with Gauri played by Bhumi Pednekar, while maintaining his relationship with his girlfriend, Suku played by Kiara Advani also a dancer.

Amid the strained marital relations, Gauri demands INR 2 Crore, for a divorce — the exact dowry amount paid at their wedding. She further complicates Govinda's life as she has a boyfriend, Baldev, an insurance agent.

Govinda's troubled life is rooted in his past, where he is at odds with his half-siblings Charulata and Vishnu Vishwakarma. They're the children from his father Gopi's first marriage, and they claim to have a right to the bungalow left to Govinda and his mother from his father's will. This disagreement has led to a longstanding legal dispute between the two families.

As Govinda considers murder as an option to find solace and plots to kill Gauri, he is enveloped by guilt and backed by debts. A job choreography opportunity turns into trouble as Govinda and Suku incur the wrath of the rich producer, Ajit Dharkar, who demands repayment for overshadowing his son Sandy in the music video.

In an instance of a freak accident, Govinda finds Sandy unconscious in the car and seizes drugs worth crores. However, the unlawful gain turns into a nightmare as Govinda and Suku find Gauri dead at their home. Blamed for the murder and unable to prove their innocence, they find themselves in the midst of allegations and threats.

Surrounded by betrayals and conspiracies, Govinda stumbles upon his girlfriend Suku's disloyalty, working for Vishnu to gain an upper hand in the bungalow case. Baldev, Gauri's boyfriend, accuses Govinda of murder, while the unexpected raid on Govinda by Ajit worsens the ordeal for him.

The continuous spiral of Govinda's life leads to much chaos and suspense until it ends on a surprising note. After six months, Govinda leads a luxurious life with Asha and Gauri, who, surprisingly, is alive. The twist reveals a meticulously planned plot, implicating Suku, Vishnu, Charulata while Govinda, Gauri, and Asha faked Gauri's death, stole and sold the drugs, and framed Inspector Javed to lead a successful heist, keeping his mother and wife safe from all the chaos. The triad, betrayed and drugged, watches as Govinda, along with Gauri and Asha, walks away, laughing, as the new rich and enjoying their exciting life in Thailand. The movie ends with the striking plot twist, where Govinda plays a mastermind, executing a perfect plan for his opponents' downfall.

Review

'Govinda Naam Mera' is a movie that tries to thrive on the talents of its ensemble cast, but falls short due to its weak storyline and superficial writing. The film, a Dharma production, is reminiscent of the 2019 debacle 'Drive', where talented actors were let down by an uninspiring plot.

Shashank Khaitan, who has a good track record with romantic comedies, struggles to direct and write a compelling comic thriller with dark undertones. Despite creating colorful characters, he fails to develop humorous situations around them, leading to a lack of credible motivations and a movie that is devoid of the necessary depth.

The film's pacing is erratic, with a slow build-up that keeps the audience guessing throughout. The love triangle in Govinda's life is not well established, making the story shaky right from the start. Some attempts at humor, such as jokes on disability, fall flat, further diminishing the film's appeal. The discovery of a dead body in the bungalow holds promise for the movie to pick up momentum, but it remains in a comatose state.

Sadly, 'Govinda Naam Mera' fails to deliver any impactful or genuine moments that could help the audience fully immerse themselves in the chaotic world on screen. The title promises electrifying dance moves and music, but the film is unable to deliver the necessary spark. The twist in the end comes too late to redeem the movie and may leave viewers feeling unsatisfied.

The acting skills of Vicky Kaushal and Kiara Advani, despite their natural flair and charm, are not enough to save the film, and even seasoned actors such as Shinde and Shahane struggle to add depth to the storyline. Ultimately, the only memorable aspect of the movie is its peculiar title.

In conclusion, 'Govinda Naam Mera' is a movie that could have been a thrilling ride with its talented cast and an interesting premise, but it is let down by weak writing and uninspiring direction. The film might not appeal to viewers who appreciate well-written, coherent, and fast-paced thrillers. This movie is likely to attract viewers who are fans of the actors or those who enjoy watching attempts at blending dark comedy and thriller, while being prepared for the shortcomings mentioned above.

Critical Review

In The Times of India review by Archika Khurana, the film 'Govinda Naam Mera' is given a score of 3.5 out of 5 stars. The reviewer enjoyed the nod to 90s comedies, and phrases such as 'Pappi Jhappi' and the matching outfits worn by Kiara and Vicky. Khurana describes the film as a certain audience-pleaser filled with ample humor, confusion, and comedy. A similar score is given by Sonil Dedhia from News 18. Dedhia enjoyed the low-brow humor, and praised Vicky Kaushal's high energy performance, along with Kiara Advani's essential role. Advani is not just here as eye candy; rather, she's in a good form. Though Bhumi Pednekar had a smaller role, she was described as exceptionally impressive.

Meanwhile, Bollywood Hungama gives 'Govinda Naam Mera' 3 out of 5 stars, despite criticizing the film's second half for being far-fetched and illogical. Nevertheless, the fast-paced narrative, unexpected moments of comedy and thrill, and the performances were worthy of praise. Times Now's Taru B Masand provided the same rating and suggested the film was suitable for a family movie night despite its slow beginning, thanks primarily to its comic timings, the guest appearance by Ranbir Kapoor, and a strong climax. From Outlook, Prateek Sur also gives the film a score of 3 stars. Sur mentions that while some twists can be figured out, the climax delivers unexpected turns that leave viewers immensely satisfied.

Parina Taneja from India TV rated the film 2.5 out of 5 stars, highlighting its many unexpected twists and turns alongside the comedy, making it a quirky thriller. 'Govinda Naam Mera' received the same rating from Shubham Kulkarni of Koimoi, who noted that while the movie cleverly draws from past influences, it remains aware of the times it made in. Kaushal, Advani, and Pednekar all gave compelling performances, capturing the audience's attention. Rohit Bhatnagar from The Free Press Journal also rated the film 3 stars, claiming it to be a one-time watch filled with surprising events that resulted in a trip of laughter.

On the other hand, Himesh Mankad of Pinkvilla and Tushar Joshi of India Today both gave the film 2 stars out of 5. They criticized the film's lackluster narrative but praised the final 20 minutes. Both reviewers highlighted the performances, with Mankad praising Kaushal and Advani's performances and Joshi singling out Kaushal's commitment to the role.
