The movie tells a story of 3 lives intertwined by love, betrayal, and redemption. A gangster named Daya (Shiney Ahuja) falls in love with a simple bar-dancer, Simran (Kangana Ranaut). The couple is always on the run from the police and also other gangsters since Daya is one himself. Simran, who dreams of starting a family one day sees her dreams get shattered as the couple loses their adopted child Bittu and Daya has to run to save his life. Leaving all the mess for Simran to deal with all alone in Seoul. Daya goes on to work in Mauritius and Dubai.
Aakash(Emraan Hashmi) being Simran’s only friend in Seoul, tells him everything about her life doused in booze. Aakash comforts her by accepting her despite her past and a romantic relationship develops between the two. Unexpectedly Daya who was in Dubai returns to Seoul. After finding out the affair between Simran and Aakash, Daya in a fit of rage beats Aakash to a pulp.
This is a classic tale of when the ghosts of the past never stop hunting you. Simran now has to decide whom she should stay with. Whether to live with Aakash, get married and start a family with him or live her life on the run with Daya. What these three don’t know is that two of them are going to be betrayed.
Gangster was released on 28 April, 2006 and was a great commercial success at the box office. The film garnered praiseworthy reviews from critics, who praised the storyline, soundtrack, cinematography, and performances of the cast members, Kangana Ranaut in particular.
On Rotten Tomatoes, Gangster received an audience score of 83% which is considered pretty high. While on IMDB, the film has a rating of 7.2/10 stars rated by 6,400 users.
Rajeev Masand, a popular critic, sees the film as an entertaining drama. The screenplay moves slower for his taste. However, he also suggests that no one can deny the story keeps the audience gripped till the very end of the film.
Raja Sen of Rediff gave the movie 3.5 out of 5 stars and commented that Ranaut is a surprising discovery because of how convincingly she performs. Furthermore, he goes on to say that she did a good job handling the highly challenging role of her essential character.
Captivating performance from Kangana Ranaut’s pivotal character - Simran, shines the most in this passionate and thrilling drama film. Simran is an attractive young lady in her early twenties. She embodies the stereotypical small-town girl with an innocent appeal and aspirations for a better life who is drawn into the chaotic world of crime.
Her’s is a complex character who is the girlfriend of a gangster named Daya (played by Shiney Ahuja). Her character is vulnerable yet she is tough as a rock and stands for the things she believes in. To be there for her child, her man and her wish to live a happy life are always in the forefront of her aspirations. However, when things get tough she resorts to alcohol to drown her sorrows. But, what caused such a dramatic turn? First, her aching for Daya who is missing from the picture as he goes off to Dubai for finding work. On top of that, her losing her child in a police-gangster shooting.
Being the damsel in distress, she is swooned by a charming and passionate man - Aakash (played by Emraan Hashmi). Throughout the film, she's torn between choosing either Daya or Aakash and living happily ever after. But, getting involved with a gangster has its consequences!
Shiney Ahuja's character Daya Shankar experiences a series of tests and emotions in the film. From finding out that the woman he loves has an affair with another man to later forgiving her. We later found out that he never betrayed anyone and wanted to work on becoming a better man. His character is of courage and sacrifice who always wanted to keep Simran safe and happy.
Emraan Hashmi does a great believable job in his role. The character is void of all the unrequired melodrama. With not too much emotions expressed by his character, he perfectly pulls off the role of an undercover agent masking his intentions. When you watch Gangster the second time, you'll notice a few unnoticed things. The smug look in Akash’s eyes when he lays in bed with Simran that was once reserved for Daya – the Gangster he’s out to get at any cost. The disgust in Akash’s eyes for Simran as she passed out inebriated trying to vanquish her misery. The pain and intensity in Daya and Simran’s eyes till the end because they lived their entire lives hoping to consummate their love.
You may wonder, did Aakash ever love Simran?
No. |
